Just had some gorgeous chunky delivered from Kemps Wool. Lovely Inca. Cannot wait to knit with it. Have 3 commissions to finish first though :(.

The Inca knits up lovely - I am re-writing one of the patterns (as a circular) as I go, knitting an Aran pattern for DH with raglan sleeves, then I have more stashed away for a sweater for me. I must admit I'm interested in taking up commissions, how did you start? I'm not very mobile so I tend to knit to keep myself sane (I half manage it some of the time :D) but there's a limit to the amount of room in my wardrobe for all these projects and until grandchildren arrive in the dim and very distant future, it might be an idea.

    Enjoy the Inca ;)

Jean Greenhowe does a lovely fireman pattern here. You could either buy it from ebay or check out the "where to buy" on her website.
Just looked on the Jean Greenhowe site, thank you, and there is a nice free pattern of a Toybox Snowman which seems particularly appropriate at the moment!

    Hi

I just found this thread! I tend to knit quite basic stuff just to relax and wanted some super chunky to knit some cushion covers. Everything I liked on eBay was a bit spendy for me so I googled some of the yarns I liked and came across http://clickettyclack.co.uk/ .

The King Cole Twister Chunky is down to £1.60 a ball from RRP £4.20 so I ordered some then got an email to say I could have a free pattern with it. I hadn't noticed the free pattern offer so was really pleased that they'd emailed me to tell me. Postage was cheap and it arrived this morning!

Lovely yarn too! Nowadays it's rare for me to find something I feel like recommending but great customer service made it stand out.

Worth adding to the list of websites you check when looking for yarn.

Better get on with it now - two cushion covers to finish by Sunday but at least it knits up quickly!

    Happy knitting,

    Louise

Not a regular contributer, but wanted to share somethng :) I was very cold in the playground on tuesday (school mum, not toddler) but am feeling poor at the moment and can't afford to buy a hat. Spent 2 days knitting myself one and finished it last night :) yes I know that you lot could probably throw one out in an hour lol but i have quite bad arthritus in my hands so i am sloooowww.

So this morning I wil be toasty warm in my lovely hat.

Does anyone on here have a knitting machine? I know it's not very o/s but i enjoy knitting and creating things and would give scarves/hats etc as gifts and with my hands it's something i'm considering. are they any good?

    Thanks.

The commissions have come from train friends and work colleagues. They just take an interest in what you're knitting and it goes from there. I don't charge my close friends, just keep the leftover wool and they tend to give me pressies in return. My friends know that I do charge £5-£10 for garments and they spread the word. Each thing I knit pays for the wool for another item for me.
  • I have knitting machines but don't tend to use them much. My best one is a Brother with a ribbing attachment and punch cards for patterns Its great for knitting on 4 ply wool, espcially for scarves or jumpers etc but it doesn't take the thicker wool. They are great for knitting kids school jumpers.

Catwoman - do you know of any local shops where they sell budget DK etc? I have looked in our Wilkinsons but they dont do many colours. We have a shop round near where the old post office was, will have a walk up there later and see wha they have.
