  • Thanks Catwoman. Think it might be a bit too chunky as the patterns knit on size 3mm needles and the cotton glace isnt dk? Great weblink too! Thankyou.
Feel free to thank me, it makes my toes tingle and my ears go warm :T

Catwoman - do you know of any local shops where they sell budget DK etc? I have looked in our Wilkinsons but they dont do many colours. We have a shop round near where the old post office was, will have a walk up there later and see wha they have.

Thanks Maytaurus, unfortunately we dont have a B & M down our way. I ventured up to our town though yesterday and found that the wool shop there had some nice double knit for only 99p a 100g ball which I thought was brilliant. Bought enough to make my Dad two cardigans.

    Hi everyone

I love this thread, it's always so inspiring, even though I haven't progressed past the scarves stage yet!

My best friend and my cousin are both due babies in the next few months, so I'm going to get my head down and do something for each of them, I mean, actually follow a pattern!!!! Anyhow, in an attempt to stay as MS as possible (and because my budget doesn't allow for it!!) I was trawling charity shops for some wool. I noticed someone said earlier in the thread that the charge for wool in a couple of shops was ridiculous (sorry can't remember who it was!) and I have to agree. The bigger charities, such as Cancer Research for example, have the most unbelievable prices on stuff. I know they're trying to raise money, but surely they'd be better selling lots and lots of low priced items rather than just a couple of high priced? Sorry, I digress. I ended up in the smaller shops, such as Kidney Research and found lots of lovely wool. I got about 10 balls, took them to the checkout and was charged £1. I questioned this, but they assured me it was 10p a ball of wool. So I'm delighted and I'd suggest to others, try the small shops - oh and ASK about wool/needles as I often find it's kept behind the counter (some won't sell needles at all - safety reasons).

On a high from my charity shop scoop, I posted a wanted ad on Freecycle and got a reply from a lovely woman who delivered a huge bag of gorgeous spotless baby wool, oh and threw in a pair of appropriately sized needles for me too! So it's worthwhile posting an ad! I'm just wondering if it's worth posting on there for circular needles, as I literally have 3 pairs of needles and really can't afford to bust my budget.

  • Hi Mardatha yes I went on to the clickettyclack site yesterday and placed an order for some lovely wool in the sale. Last night I received an email from a lady who said my wool would need to be reordered but would I like the same wool in bigger balls which was cheaper saving me £3.45 and I thought that was very nice of her as she was going to be losing out on my order, and did not have to let me know this. I emailed back and said thank you that would be grand. Good service never heard of the site before but will certainly look forward to receiving my order. The postage was decent too. Kemps wools are great as well. I have placed orders with them a while back several times and also cross stitch kits which were in the sale and a great bargain. We have two wool shops locally and it would cost the same in bus fare as it would in the postage, and I can order from a warm cosy home too. The wool tends to be expensive in our local shops, although the owners are very nice and friendly.
Do a little kindness every day.;)

I asked at my local wool shop for a pompom maker the other day and had the same reply (they had run out). I've had bad experiences with cardboard/pompoms as a child so didn't want to tackle it that way again. Anyway, you have to keep cutting them out if you make a lot (planning a lot of smoothie hats).

When I next get paid I will be ordering from ebay. I'm all for money-saving but headache-saving comes out slightly higher at the moment.

    :D Charity stuff - 3 buntings, 1 angel pocket, 2 mini teds, 2 baby hats, 2 squares, 3 smoothie hats, 3 sleeping bags, 1 aaron square, 4 boobs:D

only ordered it yesterday, and it came this morning, and at only 99p, saves lots of cutting of cardboard, and more time for knitting

Just received Lidl's weekly special offers email and they are selling some cheap wool from 12th February (e.g. 6x50gm Colorado £4.88). Haven't bought any from them so don't know about quality.

Thanks catwoman, how big should the middle hole be?

Hi - I got tips from folks here for pompoms for my DDs Christmas pressie teapot cosy, and they worked fine with 2" circle with 1" middle hole. Something that hadn't occurred to me before, either, was to cut a 2m length of wool and wrap it round, rather than try to squeeze a whole ball through :o:rolleyes: - much easier!!

    Good luck,

    Chris ;)
