Have any of you knitted these type of garments used to hold nappies in place?
My friend uses real nappies on her 9 month old daughter She can't knit but really wants knitted "longies" which are about £25  a pair online.Way out of her budget.
I've found free online patterns for them and they are pretty simple to knit and wouldn't use much wool especially for the smaller sizes.
Can they be knitted with basic double knit wool of do you have to use specially treated wool?
If DK is ok I could knit her quite a few pairs for £25.
Any advice ladies?
You need pure wool, and once made, they should be lanolinised. Some of the nappy-sellers sell the lanolin treatment.
You don't wash wool covers regularly as you do other covers; instead you air them between uses and only wash occasionally. They should be re-treated with the lanolin periodically, and if washed in detergent, they'll need to be treated again.

Hiya, just had to contact Trading Standards about my experiences with Angel Yarns. I know some of you guys have experienced problems with them too, hopefully someone, somewhere will take action eventually. I'm so fed up of writing, emailing, phoning to ask for my refund (as per what seems to be their usual mode of practice they only ever supplied one third of the order after taking payment for the whole package) but I'm determined not to let them get away with it. Only small amounts, but it's the principle. Not put me off my knitting though - just will make sure House of Fraser and John Lewis sales now get the bullk of my custom!
BTW - anyone recommend any patterns for Debbie Bliss Stella? Got a large stash of this via JL clearance.0 -
I have heard sm many times of problems with Angel yarns --surely to god it would be easier for them just to run an efficient business than go through all the hassle ...I wonder why they dont either do that or close down?0

Just been looking at these nappy soaker things.
Are they just put straight over a towelling nappy then or what? Or do you use plastic pants?
They look just like stuff you see in vintage baby knitting patterns. There are masses of patterns for leggings and so on. I've got some ancient patterns and don't they call these nappy covers a "pilch"??0 -

Yes, they are worn over a cotton nappy. No, you don't use plastic pants with them.
I've never heard the word "pilch", but yes, it does seem to be an old word used for a nappy-cover, though I don't know if it was used specifically for wool or knitted garments.0 -
Just got my patterns out and found several "pilch" items. There's even a pilch suit, which I'm sure these Mums who like the vintage look would love! It's like a jacket and pilch all-in-one, or vest and pilch all-in-one.
There are also some here

I think I'll get my needles out and target the trendy Mums.:rotfl:
I see that all the FairIsle stuff is really popular too. I saw a little girl about 4 the other day and she looked gorgeous. Little fairisle beret and scarf and beautiful choc brown short knitted swing jacket. A lovely change from all that pink stuff!0 -
So the wee-wee just goes into the nappy and wool then?
Trying to picture that;)0 -
Hi all. I have just got myself a pair of double pointed knitting needles so hopefully my knitting skills are moving up a level! Up until now I have only ever used straight pins.
So my question is what sort of things can I knitt with these? and has anyone got a link to a free easy pattern so I can get practicing?
Also , on the freebies thread, there is a link to knitt your own sack boy from the ps3 game. He looks really cute and quite easy as well.Make £10 a day challenge March 2013 £101.24 / £240 :j

The lanolin makes the wool waterproof - think how well it works for sheep!
And it helps to neutralise the urine, which is why you don't have to wash the cover every time it's used - just hang it up to air-dry, and it will smell fresh :-)0 -
Thank you Blueberrypie.:D In America they call these "soakers" and
I've been looking around and one site says that soakers are the hot thing to knit right now.0
