Hi all! What a wonderfully inspiring thread this is, although it's taken me forever to read through!

I got myself some needles and wool about 2 years ago as my youngest decided she wanted a fluffy scarf and I figured hey, I can knit one! I bought some lovely wool, some different colours, knitted her scarf, and put the needles away!

For some reason I've been getting the itch again, I really don't know why - other that the brief knit a couple of years ago, I haven't done anything since I was knee-high when I learned from my grandmother! However, I plan to quit smoking shortly (Quitnet date 7th February) so I think it might be very helpful! So, suffice to say, I'm very much a beginner, I know how to cast on and off, knit and purl - but anything else is new to me! Anyhow, I got the 2 sets of needles I've got out again tonight and figured I may as well use the wool that I'd got and set about making those scarves I promised I'd do - maybe tuck them away for this years xmas pressies - they'll be nothing complicated at all, just rows and rows of knitting, lol, but I'm dying to get started. What I really want to do is a patchwork blanket for my own bed, I guess by the time I've done that I'll either by sick of knitting squares, or thoroughly hooked! I also caught a link explaining crochet, which again my grandmother taught me, but I've pretty much forgotten everything!

Keep it up folks, you're an inspiration and I may just be spending a lot of time here bugging you all to keep me right when I eventually venture into something a little more daring than my current plans!! :D

  • Thought I'd post a photo of my Christmas Gnomes. There are 2 missing as I made 6 altogether for my family. Everybody loved them. Now I have orders for 2 more. How are you supposed to work out what to charge? Hope you like them.

Hi everyone, hopefully someone can give me a bit of advice?

Have any of you knitted these type of garments used to hold nappies in place?

My friend uses real nappies on her 9 month old daughter She can't knit but really wants knitted "longies" which are about £25  a pair online.Way out of her budget.

I've found free online patterns for them and they are pretty simple to knit and wouldn't use much wool especially for the smaller sizes.

Can they be knitted with basic double knit wool of do you have to use specially treated wool?

If DK is ok I could knit her quite a few pairs for £25.

    Any advice ladies?

Found this site which sells longies for £12 (reduced from £15) made of 100% wool or 100% lambswool, so I would guess that there is no special treatment of the yarn used and that you are only limited by the sensitivity of the baby's skin.

I've just knit a pair of babies trousers for a friend from a Sirdar baby book which look exactly the same as these. Must be loads of patterns for trousers you could use.
