  • EssexGirl - as Brown Sheep is a US company, are you sure the pattern is a UK one and not an American one? If it is a US pattern, then that needle size (size 7) will also be a US size, which translated to a UK 4.5mm needle.

Also, Cotton Fleece is a US 'worsted' weight yarn, which roughly translates to a UK DK weight.

Hope that helps. With a baby blanket, though, you really don;t have to worry. I would just go to a wool shop and choose a nice DK wool that you like. The important thing is to make sure you get a bit more than 197m of it (each ball will have a length on the label) - and check the label to make sure it's machine washable if it's for a baby blanket! They do some nice 'superwash' wools now, so you don't have to go for acrylic. You friend can then just knit with the needles recommended on the ball band.

    hi everyone

I wonder if any crocheters out there could give some advice. I am trying to master crochet (vaguely remember being taught when I was young) but what I would like to tackle is a blanket for the bed (made up with squares).
    • what size would I make each square and how many would I need for a double blanket.
    • also does anyone know if there is a pattern you can download (peferrably from UK site).
Thanks in advance for any hints/tips.

    regards

YES! I got tons of funky fur for 39p a ball, the grandchildren like it. And it came in 2 days.
  • Can anyone tell me how I can get involved in knitting for charity/preemies etc ? Would like to put my knitting to good use and help someone out there.
    Thanks

  • I have trouble with cold hands and have been wearing fingerless gloves in the house (no heating on here yet!!!! lol) but find even the finger bits annoying.

So set off looking for knitting patterns on the web and found this one

    http://knitgangsta.blogspot.com/2008/07/super-funky-fingerless-gloves.html

Have just knit it up in some double knitting wool I found using no 4mm needles - it took me 1 hr and 20 mins to knit a pair (I'm left handed but knit right handed so it takes me ages to knit - must learn continental knitting at some time......) and they are really good. Unfortunately I have big hands so have given them to my daughter who is delighted with them - the next ones I will make a lot bigger in the stocking stitch in the middle for my big paws.

They hardy take any wool at all so I am off to rummage in my wool stash and make some more!

These look fantastic, I will give it a go.

Might knit them to go a bit further up the arms than shown, and if done in a "pretty" yarn, could even wear them to go out! I think I have some light grey with silver strands in left over from a top I did yonks ago - will have to ferret it out.

  • I'm knitting these (but shorter ;) ). I have wool left from a jumper, so I'm doing them in blue stripes :j

I'll add this to the main knitting thread later ;)

They look great. I saw some in the shops today for around £7 -£8. Knitted and fleece ones. Really glad I resisted buying them now, I shall go and hunt out some wool.
  • Have now done another pair for me (all 1 colour) but instead of casting on 32 stitches and making 4 pieces I cast on 80 stitches and folded each one - I also made the rib slightly longer and did 2 x 2 rib round the wrist part which seems nicer - also the stocking stitch bit I made longer to fit my hand.

My daughter has just come in from being at her pals house and has asked me to make a couple more for her pals!

I saw on another website a pair of these but lined with fleece which would be nice too.

I love the pattern for your ones Penny
