  • I'm not a knitter, but I have a pattern for a baby blanket for a present that a friend is going to be making up for me. I have sent her the pattern but she has never heard of the wool that the pattern specifies. She is a DK and Arran kind of lady!

The wool on the pattern asks for: 4 x 100g skeins of Brown Sheep Co.cotton fleece (cotton/wool) each approx 197m

And the needles are size 7

Does anyone know if this could be swapped for baby DK?

Hi Essex-girl - I don't see why not. It might not be quite the size it's meant to be but, as it's a blanket, that won't matter like it would if it was an item of clothing. I always use size 8 needles for DK, so size 7 is not that much different in size.

Here is a link to the Brown Sheep company http://www.brownsheep.com/cf.htm they have a contact page so it might be worth asking them.

  • Hi, not read all the thread, so I hope this question has not been asked before. Sorry if it has, and please direct me to the answer!

I've recently started to knit again and have just finished a baby cardigan with hood (after starting it 5 years ago!!!!) and so got all my old needles out. I bought a bunch from a jumble sale and put them all into my HM holder my mum made me, but the sizes of all my needles are not the same. Some are imperial and some metric. Can anyone tell me the imperial sizes and their metric equivalent please? Thanks.

Sunset Gold - Erm.. go for DK or funky fur. Use two strands together on size 5 or 6 mm. Cast on 12sts, and if that looks wide enough at that , then just rib until its long enough then stop . :) Either K1 P1.....or K2 P2. All the way.
-- edited to add, you could go bigger on the needle sizes actually.
  • Thank you! I emailed them to make sure before I run out and buy wool.

    Essex girl,

I think that a 7 needle is what I used to mainly use in the days when I did Aran sweaters by the hundred (!) in which case a baby chunky should be suitable, as someone said the pattern will be fine, the finished product may just not be the exact size it is supposed to be, which is probably not a big deal.

Good luck...let us know what the site says

Hi MM, I once spent a fabulous weekend on the Aran islands and the jumpers that the ladies co-op made there were stupendous!! I used to spend a lot of holidays in Ireland and I miss it so much. My mum was irish..
  • Just do a swatch and measure it . The pattern should tell you how many rows to an inch you then adjust by using larger or smaller needles
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light
