Faith wrote:You know, even if it's a lot of cobblers, I don't care. Daily life can be a bit of a grind. It's nice to put a little bit of magic in one's life. It doesn't cost a lot of money. It doesn't hurt anybody. It makes you feel quite positive and hopeful. What is wrong with that? As long as you're sensible about it!
And nobody can prove it doesn't work
Well...........you could attempt to prove whether it did or didn't work if you used a controlled trial. Not that anyone would bother to do that.
You can feel positive and hopeful without putting your faith in magical money trees and ribbons and burying coins. It's superstitious.
I sure as heck don't want this kind of "magic" in my life.
If I told you to paint all your walls lime green with pink spots and say a load of "spells" I just made up, and swore that "they really did work!", would you do it?0 -
Hi cranna - I don't think that anyone would consider such a wild colour scheme for ANY reason, apart from maybe the interior of a wendyhouse - that's the thing, we read a book, we buy a plant, we tidy up, we cheer up, why is this so wrong? - where is the harm done? little or no money has been spent and no walls need to be painted over to cover pink spots0

I'm happy for people to tidy up and cheer up, I just don't like the mysticism associated with it. People should accept responsibility for their financial decisions and the consequences of them, but also accept that some things (whether good or bad) do just happen by chance.
I mean, look at some of the things on here. People have quoted things like receiving a tax refund as being due to feng shui. Er, no, you should have got that anyway and if you didn't get it you should have taken the proper steps to ensure you did get it.
Ok, so you don't like the colour scheme. If I gave you some "magic spells" to say, would you say them? They promise you wealth, happiness, and good programmes on telly!0 -
Cranna, what about Karma -
you do good things and good things come to you
or to put it the way that I prefer -
you do good things, good things come to you so you go out and do more good things because you are feeling good.
Moving a few things round your house and doing the coins, plant etc etc. makes you feel good - I think that's where it starts0 -

Take away the mystical nonsense from Feng Shui and we're left with: interior design. Having a pleasant living/working environment makes sense. It has nothing to do with balancing imaginary "Yin and Yang" energies though.
I think that to become an MSE, one of the main aims is to become an informed consumer. This means, quite simply, learning how to make good choices and decisions, and eliminate the bad and silly ones.
If, for example, someone's business is going through a rough patch and they decide to make things better by buying a money tree in the (mistaken) belief that it will help. Well, the possible outcome should be obvious.
Irrational beliefs can have consequences. They are not always obvious though, which is why the "what's the harm?" argument is used.
What happens if the money tree doesn't work, take advice from a psychic?0 -
If the money tree doesn't work, then I simply have a nice plant sitting in the corner of my room, it is hardly a natural progression to then rush out and see a psychic!0

I can't really see how "moving a few things round your house and doing the coins, plant etc etc" count as "do(ing) good things", particularly.
If you want to do something good and spread your karma or whatever, do some voluntary work in the time you'd spend reading the book and hunting for the plant, or give the money you'd spend on buying feng shui stuff to charity.0 -

I just think that if we make good, rational, informed decisions, we'll benefit from them. If we make silly decisions, we'll suffer the consequences.
All my point really is, is that if we place faith in things like Feng Shui, then we may have to face the consequences of our irrational thinking.0
