I think that Feng Shui is helping our finances...am I nuts?

I don't really think those things can be lumped together at all so that's where we differ - I think there is a huge difference between getting a free/cheap money tree and spending money on seeing a psychic - they are massively different things. I also think it's a bit patronising to dismiss things as silly and irrational when it is all down to individual opinion; as Squeaky says, whatever floats your boat....
I honestly don't think a money tree is going to make me face any "consequences". It's not like "Hey I've got a money tree so I'm giving up my job" - clearly no one here is relying on this kind of thing for their income so if it fails, it fails - they will continue to gain/save money in other ways. Doesn't seem to me that anyone here is taking this very far...
It's all about different opinions isn't it? Just like some people here like to use white vinegar, and others like to use brown0 -
Umm what has happened to this thread.
It was nice bit of fun and now people are starting to get a little bit funny and shirty about it.
If you don't like the ideas of what being is being said who said you had to follow them. No one so leave the people alone who wanted to buy a money/jade plant etc.
I don't remember anyone said that they are putting there faith in to feng shui to bring them untold riches.
If tidying up and getting rid of clutter helps you focus on other things like your finances and getting them order then that is all for the good.
I for one have had a jade plant since I was about 15 years old. Reason because they are easy to look after and I like catcus as well. Has it brought be good luck in finances. The truth I don't know. But I am comfortable off and not on skid row.
I think we will agree to disagree on this.
Sorry but a few posters in this thread have really got my goat. I know this public forum but we are having a bit of FUN. Sounds like you don't know what it is and need to lighten up a bit.

Now I know you're lying! :rotfl:
Seriously though, Doctors the world over prescribe placebos to people because in many cases they work. The mind is a powerful tool and it's useful (in certain cases) to harness this power. If a person believes that placing their furniture in a certain way will help them in their life, does it matter if it sounds like a load of rubbish? The point is the person has been encouraged to start to make changes. It may well be all in the mind and nothing to do with feng shui but the small belief in feng shui has acted like the catalyst to start things off. The person may now have a more positive attitude which will reflect beneficially on their day to day life. Feng shui wont have made the difference, the person's new outlook will have.
Now I can't speak for anyone else here, but at the moment, there's nothing particularly wrong in my life. There's the usual run of the mill DIY hassles/odd skint day/argument with OH or kids....but nothing that I'm actively seeking an answer for or to lessen the effect of. Whenever I do have a problem, I'm going to deal with it the way I always do, by calmly working out my best course of action...........then I'll ignore it and instead I will go sit in the 'do not disturb upon pain of death' corner with a book.I will have no urge to pray to my money plant or to tie bits of red ribbon round the old oak tree. (Sorry got waylaid there, lol.)
The point is that I have bought a book which (to me) is less about feng shui and more about understanding clutter (which is very relevant to me). I also bought a plant which is supposed to bode well for my finances but it wont change my life or way of thinking in any way.
I think the harm may be if someone places all their hopes and wishes on a money tree coming though for them or believing that their life will miraculously change for the better just because they've implemented some feng shui policies.
As much as I can tell though, that is far from the case with the posters who have posted on this thread. It's a bit like buying a lottery ticket and being mildly optomistic in the 2 day run up to the draw.....then screwing up your ticket and tossing it in the bin with a shrug of your shoulders as soon as Wednesday comes and you don't win.
To me, it's a bit of fun that has involved buying a plant (I probably would have bought a plant anyway for the living room) and a useful book to help me make a start on clearing years worth of clutter. It's certainly not a deep meaningful belief which will encroach on the more logical aspects of my life, but it has helped kickstart my resolve to do something about things I should have tackled ages ago with regard to my clutter.Herman - MP for all!0 -
Nicely put aliasjo and calley
There is nothing wrong with a bit of fun - as long as no one is hurt and we can afford whatever we do, and do not lose free will and responsibility for our actions.
No one is suggesting that someone buys a money tree and then spends thousands on the lottery for example. The whole point is that you carry on as normal."This site is addictive!"

I just think that if we make good, rational, informed decisions, we'll benefit from them. If we make silly decisions, we'll suffer the consequences.
All my point really is, is that if we place faith in things like Feng Shui, then we may have to face the consequences of our irrational thinking.
I think that it is fine for people to try feng shui if they want to and there is nothing wrong with having a mystical/alternative worldview, after all there are still plenty of people who believe in god/s (can't get much more mystical than that!).
It is only recently that the medical profession in this country has accepted that acupuncture actually works. Maybe in years to come we will find out that feng shui works too…

You don't see any contradiction in those two paragraphs?
Sure, it's up to the individual to do it if they want to. I'm not proposing some kind of law to ban feng shui!
The original title was "I think that Feng Shui is helping our finances...am I nuts?" - I don't see anything wrong with giving my opinion just because it differs from the opinions of most of the others who've posted on here. If it was "Please give me feng shui tips!" that might be something different, but the OP's title was questioning whether she was "nuts" for believing feng shui was helping her.

If you want to do something good and spread your karma or whatever, do some voluntary work in the time you'd spend reading the book and hunting for the plant, or give the money you'd spend on buying feng shui stuff to charity.
I wasn't suggesting that moving a few things around was me 'doing good'. I was suggesting that if you do something to make you feel positive like FS, you are more likely to spread this positivity around.
Crana - you mustn't have read an earlier post of mine - I had been explaining that I give goods to charity in greater quantities than most people because of my ebay work.
When we were strapped for cash we kept up our commitment to regular donations to a local charity and since things seem to be coming to us rather than away from us now we had taken up another charity commitment.
As far as you suggesting that I do voluntary work rather than reading a book, I manage to fit both in - I shop for a housebound elderly woman - this is what I mean by doing good, it may not be a great deal yet while I work full time, but the little I do makes me feel good, and if that gets rewarded somehow then that's good too.
edit - I just saw your last post - yes, I did ask if I was nuts, I seem to have 2 yes votes, thanks!0 -

Possibly. I do think you have a point. However, I also think that it would be a very small minority of people who would be the type who would be affected so deeply in this way.
It's like everything in life, there are always minority groups who are affected in a different way to the norm. The majority of people (including those on this thread) are perfectly able to take feng shui as a light interlude to an otherwise boring day. It gives us all a little laugh that when we dance round the money plant naked at midnight, we believe we are going to a cheque in the post the next day.
(Or is that just me?)

I think you mean skyclad aliasojo
at least then you are dressed at least, albeit by the *sky*
there are many people who believe in Feng Shui, and just because the "West knows best", IMHO, have fun where life lets you!!0
