Just for those who are interested, here's how my deal ran, as sent to ferris........

right, it went like this - called on 7 Oct to give notice on ctt, due to end on 8 nov. At the time they tried to offer me something but no better than via quidco to their website. around a week ago asked them to transfer my number to payg when the ctt ended, which they then proceded to mess up a bit(but not really relevant to this). During this call they spent an hour trying to get me to agree to this or that deal, I stuck to my guns (truthfully, I might add - not worth giving them a pack of lies in my opinion) that I could get the same deal cheaper through a retailer (simply3G pretty good, and £30 via quidco too). As I said on the thread, one of the offers would have been good for a heavy user, but I don't need that - it was something daft like an extra 2000 mins for around £25pm.

They called me back a couple of times during that last week from a number that is 07782 333333, again not offering anything better(also sorted out the payg problem while they were on the line, but again, not really relevant).

Then, on Tuesday they called back, 2 days before ctt due to terminate, and just came straight out with the offer which I duly accepted.

I think the thing is to be honest with them - the high user tariff I mentioned above was good IF you use the phone that much, I don't so would be paying for something I wouldn't use anyway. I didn't try to say I could get the earth from a retailer, just honestly what I was going to get(in my case, nokia 6288 on m'n'm300 from simply3G, £15 p.m. with £95 cashback and another £30 for buying through quidco). I had said to them that I didn't even want to change my phone (true, I like my U880 and it's still going strong after 2 yrs, and mrs GunJack was going to use the nokia anyway), so this may have helped eventually. And I never asked for PAC, either. The fact that I was going to take out another 3 ctt anyway but via a retailer may have helped, I can't say for sure. And I've had 2 ctts on the go with 3 for the last 4 years, never missed a DD may also have helped(in fact, the last guy who called me with the offer stated that I've got "an excellent credit rating" with 3).

So, all in all, I was polite, honest, and knew what my alternative plan was (which I took out anyway as it happens, so Mrs GunJack could have the new phone). Okay, so it means I've got 3 ctts on the go for a while, but it gives us even more flexibility and options when the next one expires, and it's always good to have the spare!!

as for not having the deal in November, I've got it so they do, you're probably talking to the wrong dept., you have to wait for them to call you for the best stuff....

i guess i'll call to convert to PAYG at some point in the notice period, which doesn't require notice.

    :( here's hoping i get the £5/month call...

If you convert to PAYG you won't be getting any contract retention offers at all.

yes, i thought that might be the case too and it was only GunJack's experience (in full above) which seems to indicate the exact opposite:

i would be interested to know if you're speaking from experience as well. i wouldn't be surprised if you were: as ever, it's all a bit confusing, a bit inconsistent.

i'm quite annoyed at them in general now, as they offered my sister - who has been been a three customer for 3 years, and on a £40/month contract for the last year - nothing except for a £21/month for 100 minutes/100 texts. that is frankly laughable, as you can currently get 1100 minutes/texts mix with a nice phone for less than £24 a month after quidco from their own website. back to cashback in time for xmas, i guess...

My post was "If you convert to PAYG........", and is correct.

Gunjack had not actually converted, but had requested to convert (if I read his post correctly).

ah, i see the misunderstanding. my initial post was badly worded (sorry about that). GunJack requested his number to be converted to PAYG but only at the end of the contract, which is exactly what i intend to request shortly before the end date too.

the only reason i mentioned the thing about notice was that the CS lady on the phone initially said that requesting conversion to PAYG also required 30 days notice, and then suddenly changed her mind.

guys - yes, I did indeed ask them to convert my SIM/number to payg WHEN THE CONTRACT RAN OUT. They proceeded to mess it all up (see above) and I'm now waiting for a new SIM with same number on my retention tariff, it's due tomorrow :D

just so that i'm prepared for when it goes just as bad/ten times worse, how exactly did they mess it all up?
  • I have an 18month contract with 3 not due to expire til May or June. VTT700 (400mins/250txts) £35/month and i foolishly go well over my minutes.

I can upgrade (not renew) my priceplan to £40/month for 750 minutes/150txts- does this mean that i would be ineligible for a decent retention deal at the end of my contract later does anyone know?

Was told to call in april or march for decent deals, i mentioned that I fancied leaving and they said they would put me through to retentions who would almost certainly offer me a better deal with lower line rentals "of 15-20ppm if you renew rather than upgrade your contract now and we'd give you a new handset too". I was put through to someone stubborn who offered me an even worse deal than the initial one and said that there was no way i could expect a new handset or lower deal if i renew now! I pointed out what was said to me earlier and she denied this was true! I have tried several times to batter down my deal, once i was offered £35pm for 750/150 but i didnt accept.

Bloody 3! Might have to leave i think....

eek... i wonder if that's why you ended up with such a good deal? like a goodwill gesture. oh well, nothing i can do now except wait, really. the good thing is, at least they CAN do it straight away, so i can delay requesting the change till the day before the contract ends.
