Surely in certain circumstances exceptions to EVERY rule should be permitted. It's called using 'Fair Judgement'!
If you had read the post by MSE Controller2 properly, you would realise that in certain circumstances an exemption can be made.
This is what he said.
To clarify the rules, you are NOT allowed to link to the reffers forum from the main site without permission from a member of the MSE team.
This is only about an exemption for a link to the refferers board. In this case, because the posts have been deleted/altered by the team, it is obvious that permission is not forthcoming in this case.
This exemption only covers the link to the refferers board. It says nothing about members being allowed to spam different threads with links to the refferal board, which is what was happening as well.
The reason I like the rules of this site enforced is because I have seen on other forums in the past what can happen when things get out of hand. I have seen boards locked to read only because a few members couldn't/wouldn't follow the rules for posting. This ended up punishing everybody who used the site because of the actions of a very few people. Why should we risk the same happening on this site so that one or two people can be allowed to do what they want? The rules on this site are very clear and easy to follow IMO. I can't see the problem with this. How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

Anyway, for the benefit of others considering E7even I thought you might find the following of some interest.E7even announces Easynet LLUStream agreement
6th May 2005 - E7even (http://www.e7even.com) an independent UK based broadband ISP has today announced it has entered into an agreement with Easynet to provide high-speed DSL services to UK residential and business customers using the Easynet LLUStream™ services.
Under this agreement E7even will be able to provide up to 4.4M homes and 750,000 businesses in the larger metropolitan areas, with DSL products running at speeds of up to 8Mbps. E7even will announce their products and pricing imminently and delivery of the new high-speed DSL products will start in August of this year.
In the meantime however, E7even has reduced the price of its 512k products to the equivalent of £10 per month for annual and biennial packages. The savings achievable, once customers can be serviced via the new LLUStream™ exchanges and BT's recently introduced rebate scheme, will allow all of its customers to share in the new low priced 512k services, not just those in LLU enabled areas. The first 2000 customers will also receive a free double speed upgrade to 1Mbps for the duration of their contract and a free modem.
Charlotte Mitchell, Managing Director of E7even, commented "we hope that the advent of LLUStream™ will not only enable us to deliver high-speed, competitively priced DSL products but it will also help to drive down BT Wholesale rates for its DSL products. The whole UK broadband market is in a constant state of flux and we feel that ISPs having multiple wholesale DSL suppliers is essential for the continued enhancement of products and pricing."
Justin Fielder, Group Business Development Director of Easynet, commented "E7even are planning some exciting developments for the marketplace, and I expect them to be able to continue to innovate solutions for their business and consumer customers with the use of LLUStream".

I make no judgement about whether this specific company offer a good deal or not. It would depend entirely on individual consumer needs i.e. Tech support, price, speed. What I would say though is if we allowed such links (albeit indirect) these boards would quickly be filled with advertising. Posters would simply direct everyone towards the company they stand to gain from financially. I'm not suggesting that that is whats happening in this case, but as a general principle it cannot be allowed.
On another point, the abcons are different from board guides. Board guides are volunteers who help the boards tick over smoothly by helping out in their specific forums. They do a very good job and should not be subject to some of the comments I've seen in the forums as a whole lately.0 -
An interesting discussion on the rights & wrongs of referral posts.
I agree that there must be rules, but if we are not allowed to mention a referral in a post, how would members know about them ? I think that reference to the referrals board should be OK. However it seems that there are rules for some and not for others. Check out the post below and you will see what I mean.
The Board Guide removed an e-mail addrees quite properly, but the referral number (for E7even incidentally) remained !!!

the reason the referral number wasn't deleted is because it is, quite rightly, in the referrers board
please let's not use these forums to argue

The whole idea of this site is based on moneysaving.
When someone like Mike Paterson posts what is probably the cheapest Broadband in the UK,
thats money saving.
I fully agree we don`t want every Tom,!!!!!! and Harry advertising their wares all over the boards, hence the referrer`s board but when someone starts a new post (instead of searching for the subject it in the first place) that mentions E7 I can`t see why they can`t be directed to the referrer`s board.
Whether people use MP`s code is entirely down to them,I don`t see him twisting arms but I do see him splitting the fee with them.0 -
Apologies, I was directed to that thread from another post and did not realise it was on the referrals board.Glad wrote:the reason the referral number wasn't deleted is because it is, quite rightly, in the referrers board

Okay, may I please add my two cents in here....
What I find offensive about the e7even posts is that they all appear to be identical (with a link to the referrers forum) and the majority of the postings have been posted in discussions where the information is irrevelent or misleading. For example:
http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=69700
Original Post:
freenetname 2mb 5gb/m + domain £18
i'm on freenetname, they have just increased my usage to 5gb/month, i get a free .co.uk domain, and 2mb broadband for £18 http://www.freenetname.co.uk/
Mike Patterson's reply:
2M uncapped for £10 per month
e7even have a special offer - 2M connection uncapped for £10 per month.
This also includes a free .uk domain name registration and hosting, plus free static ip address.
This offer ends July 13th though.
You need to sign up for a year in advance (and pay a £50 connection fee) or if you pay 2 years in advance you get free connection too.
Cheers
Mike
***edited by MSE Controller2 - No linking to referrers forum.***
I personally feel, that if Mike was really about Money Saving, then he would be more transparent about the hidden costs (ie, the subject line should have read "2Mb Uncapped for £14 a month" - this would include the hidden cost of activation).
In the example posted above, I don't think it was a good place to post about e7even - is it a better deal than the one that was being discussed? No, not for me! I migrated into Freenetname and I'm paying less monthly then I would've if I'd chosen e7even.
An identical response from the same individual was also posted in the "Cheapest Broadband providers discussion". I remember seeing it there, but it appears to have been deleted. In the "Cheapest Broadband providers discussion, I recall that there was no mention of the caveat that you need to sign up for a year in advance and that there is a £50 connection fee, or that technical support is £1 per minute! It also doesn't appear that you get a modem with this deal which is another hidden cost.
My problem is that due to the identical nature of these postings, I put these in the same category as Spam and annoying pop up adverts.
Because the poster has something to gain from posting them (getting a referrers bonus), and is posting them rather haphazardly, I have trouble taking the information we are getting from this poster seriously. This behaviour is abuse of MSE forums where we should be sharing unbias and transparent information with one another.
Another two cents added.0 -
I have 'lurked' on this site since early last year, and I find the reasoning behind the deletion of Mike's post unfair
And you just happened to feel that strongly about it, that you registered in order to post the fact?. Are you sure you aren't the OP using a new alias?
For the record, I am not related to the OP in any way, but I do feel that it he / she has a good point - having also suffered a visit from the signature snipping fairy for what was promotion of a personal website with no affiliate gain whatsoever.
Perhaps the fairest way of adjudication would be to scrap the affiliate links area altogether so there can be no confusion regarding what is and isn't acceptable either in signatures or on the main forum, lets face it, they are the main instigator of spam in any case.0 -
OK
for the second time of asking could we please keep to the topic which is an offer from E7even
