Don't be surprised if you & your DH are bad-mouthed because you have made a stand against greedy BIL & his wife-to-be...sound like you're best out of it, even without your new worries which are much more important than they are.

    Hope things are going OK.

ooo Floss, the bad mouthing has already started..... mil had 'things' to say about it at the back end of the week - we're selfish and have ruined their day and it wouldn't have hurt to make a bit of an effort apparently :rolleyes:...

Did you suggest as it was their wedding it was up to them to make the "effort" to pay for it:rolleyes:

Don't you dare let them make you feel bad.

Either they know they are in the wrong & are trying to deflect it onto you & thats bad.
Or they don't know they are in the wrong & are seriously deluded & need to know. Hopefully by you not backing down to them, the message might sink in.

Anyway as I said, don't you dare let them "freeloaders" make you feel bad.

I think it's time for you to nip this in the bud right now while you still have time as the wedding is still 18 months away. You're going to have to be brutally honest about this and tell the couple you simply cannot afford this expense and that you're opting out of the bridesmaids/page boy roles now, giving them sufficient time to make other arrangements. Tell them that you are not going to be emotionally blackmailed into living beyond their means and suggest that if they want this kind of wedding, they're either going to have to fund it themselves, or scale down their planning.

Yes it obviously can be done and fair play to them.....but

A local caterer provided an afternoon buffet lunch for 40 guests and an evening meal of chilli con carne and rice or potato pie and peas for twice that number for barely £300.

Drinks for the reception came from Asda - one-litre bottles of sparkling wine for £2.99 each.

Some corners should never be cut. :D

Stick to your guns, and don't listen to them - you've got a wonderful grasp on reality, which they obviously haven't. As for MIL - is she prepared to stump up for your children's required outfits, to keep the bride & groom happy? She's just reacting (and probably annoyed that you have said what she's really thinking before she did!) - she's got 18m to get used to the idea, by which time your kids may not have wanted to play a part in the event!

Next thing will be they're planning the same stuff that Wayne & Colleen are, for their £2.5m wedding
  • chilli con carne and rice at a wedding? think of the stink! I wouldn't want that wafting around on my big day! (I have been known to make OH sleep on the sofa after chilli or spag bol... i hasten to add, for his wafts not mine!)

Don't let her get to you. If you feel yourself weakening, then come back here and you'll get all the support and encouragement you need. :grouphug:

Have your aguments ready. Have you asked her if she really expects you to take out a loan/overdraft to fund someone else's extravagant wedding 'cos that is effectively what they are asking?
