"Personal Possessions" away from home too, another waste of time ? If you're on holiday wouldn't you claim on travel insurance ?
Actually I do the opposite, I take the personal possesions insurance a part of the home insurance, and when I get travel insurance I opt out of their personal possessions insurance, as it works out much cheaper this way and as Lisyloo mentioned this means your stuff is insured all the time, not just when on holiday.
I actually up the amount covered to cover my bicycles and camera equipment. Not all insurers allow you to put bikes on personal possessions tho, so do check.

I have just had an excellent renewal quote beaten by Lloydstsb at https://www.insurance.co.uk call 0800 056 3040
115,000 re-building and 35,000 contents with standard cover Norwich Union quoted £170.
Ask Lloyds to double the difference up to a maximum of £100 and their quote of £243 was reduced to £143 (£100 cheque back within 28 days of the 1st interest free d/d date)
I look forward to it.
The quote has to be a renewal and I believe the offer is open until 31/12/04. Good luck

From someone who works in the industry paying out some of these claims do not loose sight of the fact that you are in effect buying a promise so be sure who you are buying it from will live upto that promise in your hour of need. I have worked for many of the insurers and some are definately better at paying claims than others. The price you pay for the premium is important but not the only consideration when buying. You will also be surprised how much variation there is in the cover.
I saved a lot on my premiums when I took out my caravan and household insurance with the NFU and I think you will find their cover is better than most of all the insurers. Oh and I have no connections with NFU and am not a farmer but a "towny".Its only me from over the seas said Barnacle Bill the sailor0 -

That's a very valid point. Just compare the kind of cover you get for personal effects under the average travel policy with that under a decent home insurance. You'll soon realise why it's best to keep this cover with the home insurer:-- travel insurers often apply ridiculously low single article limits (e.g. £150 for any single item)
- travel insurers often don't offer "new for old" cover
- travel insurers place much greater restrictions and warranties on the cover they offer.
- travel insurers sometimes apply multiple excesses if several family members lose possessions at the same time
- travel insurers often outsource claims handling to firms whose main aim in life is to reduce your claim to the smallest possible figure
Lastly, home insurers hope to have more than a fleeting relationship with you (assuming you don't swap every renewal) and therefore you may have a somewhat stronger bargaining position when negotiating a claim settlement.0 -
Hi All,
This is my first post.
I just got a great quote from the Sunday Times insurance service (leaflet in the paper yesterday).
They've sold me a policy to cover £400,000 rebuild cost and £50,000 of contents. The cost was £300 cheaper than Direct Line who very kindly decided to jack up their rates this year! The cover amounts are standard for every policy but the cost to you depends on the usual stuff about no. of rooms, locks, area etc etc.
I also added 'out of house' cover for jewellery etc for an extra £70, which is still way cheaper than any other quote I got. The policy is provided by Legal and General.
The reason it's so much cheaper is that it is a group discount i.e. the same policy for evey one (£400K+£50K).
Contact details are:
Tel : 0800 013 1083 ref. QCK4
Lines open 8-8 Mon-Fri and 8-4 Sat and 10-3 Sun.
This is run by RIAS! They saved me £150 and doubled my cover from More Than! I got a quote from their website HTTP://WWW.RIAS.CO.UK you wont find them on the internet search engines. Try them out!0 -
Don't know if this should be in here or somehwere else. Yesterday I posted a 'thank you for advice' and was feeling very pleased with myself for saving money, today I am really annoyed with Barclays Home Insurance. My building and contents were with them last year and when I received their renewal notice I decided to check around. I asked them for a better price and they couldn't do it.
Today I checked my 0nline banking and they had taken out a year's premium, firstly my fault for not checking all the wording in the renewal letter, if you don't let them know they automatically renew.
Now I don't know if it's just me but I think that is pretty sneaky. I am now in the position of having instructed another cmpany to insure my house and contents and when they want to take the money it will have gone to Barclays.
I had to make a long trip today to withdraw cash to cover this as they won't refund the money till December even though they only took it yesterday. :'(Women and cats will do as they please and men and dogs should get used to it.;)

This is such a good deal I though I would share it with you as nobody can come close and they don't quote on the insurance supermarket.
Mortgage with Portman who quoted my insurance at an incredibly low price:
1970's end terrace 3 bed value £175,000 in Hampshire.
Buildings:
Rebuilding upto 325,000
Excess £75
Contents:
Insurance upto £50,000
high risk £10,000
Got to say not much else, I don't have accidental damage etc.I always keep the price down by not adding all the extras
They quoted £11.95 per month (£143 per year), no extra for monthly payment as its added to mortgage payment, no renewal it just goes up with inflation (index linked) at the start of each year.
I think that an unbeatable deal insurance supermarkets best was £200
PS it says on the policy Insurer: Royal Sun Alliance.0 -
All
Have just managed to save £70 on my Bldg Insurance. The first time I used Insure SuperMarket, it stated that Sainsbury provided the cheapest Bldg Insurance. However subsequently when I used Insure Supermarket, they consistenly stated that Zurich Insurance was cheaper.
I still went ahead and asked Sainsbury for a Quote and obtained a Bldg Insurance for a 2 Bed house for £60 with an excess of £150. They also throw in Legal Assistance and Emergency cover for free
The funny thing is Sainsbury resell insurance from Halifax. Asked Halifax for a quote and they quoted me £124 for the same. Called up thier customer service and asked why it was so, but did not get a satisfactory answer.
So I suggest do try Sainsbury Home Insurance and see if it gets your insurance down
Many Thanks to Martin and all the guys+ gals who contribute on this forum. You all are just super

I'm really confused....
Had a letter today to advise that our home and contents insurance are going up in jan.
When are we able to change?
We took it out around last jan/feb and pay mthly DD.
Do home and contents both have to be with the same insurer?
I tried the link on here to see who would give the best figures but it said that Halifax would be the only people willing to protect our type of property.
We live in a flat that was built in about 1983.
It's not a block of flats or anything, we have our own entrances and garedn etc but there are doors around the corner so people can get into the flats above.
It is double glazed, locks on every entrance including an extra lock on patio door and also a deadlock? on front door.
Also an alarm is fitted and we live in a nice enough area, so i don't understand why suddenly noone would want to cover us??
Any ideas anyone??
We need to keep all of our outgoings down to a minimum!Dream of being mortgage free....
