Buildings & Contents Insurance Discussion

Of course contents on flats should not be a problem. ( so long as private locked front door)
Buildings - most flats have some arrangement in a service charge, management agent fees , lease or joint with other owners - are you saying yours does not ? as the above will generally give you better protection , and same agreement would cover the share of commonual costs
( ie is it fair that top floor owners have to cover the roof- especially if flat roof)
that said , don't think its a major issue with some companies ( although again if mainly flat roof it can be)Any posts on here are for information and discussion purposes only and shouldn't be seen as (financial) advice.0 -

I used the insurance supermarket link on this site to get the best aprox offer which happened to be "esure" in my case.
I don't have any high value items so this may have helped. Also I set my volantary excess to £100 on contents.
I think it depends on area also and where we live is quite low on crime0 -
I was interested to read the point above on flats. I "technically" live in a flat. It's actually called a Cottage Flat and I have my own front door - there's no landing, communal floors etc. It's basically a building that's been quartered ie two separate houses top and bottom. However, because it's classed as a flat had the same problem and could only get a quote from Halifax which was about £150 dearer than my renewal from Berry Birch and Noble. Going to phone around a few numbers I picked up from here but certainly remember when I moved in had a few companies refuse me insurance because of the type of house. If memory serves me right Esure was one of them. Anyway will give an update soon.0

Just saved £157 on my renewal with L&G using insuresupermarkets deal with Norwich Union. Bldgs £145k incl acc. cover, contents £35k, personal possessions and legal cover - £186 for the year.
Thanks MSE.If you're happy to sell it to me at a price I am happy to pay - then I want it cheaper.0 -
Thankyou Martin for the information. I have just saved 30% on my home and contents insurance in one phone call to Norwich Union 0800 888 222. Delightful scottish lady in the call centre, full of helpful tips to save me a few more quid. The internet search engine you recommend is great, but its best to give the insurers a call to get the best deal.0

Hi All,
This is my first post.
I just got a great quote from the Sunday Times insurance service (leaflet in the paper yesterday).
They've sold me a policy to cover £400,000 rebuild cost and £50,000 of contents. The cost was £300 cheaper than Direct Line who very kindly decided to jack up their rates this year! The cover amounts are standard for every policy but the cost to you depends on the usual stuff about no. of rooms, locks, area etc etc.
I also added 'out of house' cover for jewellery etc for an extra £70, which is still way cheaper than any other quote I got. The policy is provided by Legal and General.
The reason it's so much cheaper is that it is a group discount i.e. the same policy for evey one (£400K+£50K).
