Buildings & Contents Insurance Discussion

I recently received my Home and contents insurance renewal from Direct Line.
By going to their website and asking for a quote with the same details, I got it for £30 less! Never automatically renew each year, always go back online for a requote :-)0 -
Hello, everyone
I am having trouble getting reasonably priced home insurance because my husband is a student nurse. (He's 48 years old; we have two mid-aged children; we've been married 15 years; the guy never goes to parties). Does anyone know of a good insurer who WILL accept us? At the moment, we're paying over-the-top for Halifax Home Insurance, but, naturally, I'd like the best deal possible. Oh, and I would like to have legal cover too. (No reason, just like the security).
Thanks much.

Hi all,
I'm on a quest to buy buildings and contents insurance for my new home...
I have read Martins article and I'm using insuresupermarket.com
the results came up as follows:
Supermarket Insurance - £126.11
Key Connect -£127.39
Norwich Union Direct - £202.00
Budget - £208.17
NHI (Homes Over 20 Yrs Old) - £221.57
Post Office - £224.20
Egg - £239.06
Abbey National - £241.69
Does anyone know anything about the cheaper 2 providers?
Should I be avoiding them as they won't pay out as easily...
there seems to be a big difference between these 2 and the rest... Why? is it to good to be true...
Thanks

I use Directline and so does few of my friends and they are the cheapest as far as I know. I have not made a claim yet, but had a claim analysis done. The customer services seems fine, but only time will tell.
By the way, Halifax is trying to sell this product now and they are actively promoting it. And they were very close to Directline's quote. Why don't you talk to them and see what they offer? The quickest way to double your money is to fold it in half and put it back in your pocket. :rolleyes:0 -
Obviously different insurers are after different types of risk, so there should always be some that come out particularly well. By using insurance supermarket you are essentially looking at a panel, and when IS goes to key connect they are running another panel of insurers , so enough people have tried to get a lot of underwriters to look at it. The key connect panel is run by Heath Lambert (IIRC), who are huge and very decent brokers, and I’d have no qualms about trusting them – they may still screw you when it comes to claims, but ‘differences of opinion’ will always arise.
If you want an easy payout use Liverpool Victoria.if it's more than 10 stone, and that hairy, it's probably not a dog...it may be a wookie.0 -
My partner and I are experiencing some major hassles getting our own personal home contents insured. Here is the problem. Just under five years ago Thames Water flooded our property as a result of thier negligent actions. We then put in the relevant contents claim and let things progress. When the inspectors came round they told us that our claim has been declined and our insurance cancelled.
Their reason for this was Non-Disclosure: We had always dealt with the same brokers and for some reason they moved our insurance from one company to another (presumeably because of a cheaper premium). However it would seem that they did not release/reveal our minimal past claim history. Like most people, we then signed the papers that they sent us without reading through the small print. It was for this reason of Accidental Non-Disclosure that they cancelled our claim. The incident with Thames Water was then settled Out-of-Court.
However, now nearly 5 years on it would seem that neither my partner or I are able to get any contents insurance as one the underwriters standard questions is typically "have you or anyone in your household EVER had any insurance cancelled or declined".
Do you know of any companies where we can get insured. Also how can I get this lifted as this is an exceptionally harsh penalty considering it was accidental non-disclosure and was certainly not done deliberately. Are we to be stuck with this label forever? At the time we did appeal to the insurance ombudsman to complain about our insurance being cancelled and they said that the insurer can do whatever they want. I guess we should have gone after the broker.
Any Help exceedingly greatfully received.
Many Thanks0 -
Norwich Union are currently offering half price contents insurance when you take out buildings cover before 30th September 2005
Enjoy 50% off your Contents Insurance when you buy your Buildings Insurance. Get a quote for buildings and contents insurance before 30th September 2005 and get contents cover half price! Plus, this price is fixed for two years (provided there are no claims in the first year) so you won't have to worry about your premium increasing at renewal - keeping your home altogether happier for longer.
I just took out cover with all available extra options added to contents for £40 cheaper than the insure supermarket quote and £113 cheaper than I paid for less cover last year.:cool:A cynic is a man who knows the price of everything but the value of nothing.0 -
Just want to say HUGE "thanks" for the lead to Chase Templeton, our house insurance has always been quite high because of the contents cover required, but when I got our the usual "I recommend renewal" letter from my normal broker at a premium of £1130 for main house and £200 for our buy-to-let, I thought it was time to shop around.
Tried a few providers but no joy, then I spoke to Ed Lee at Chase, and he came back with quotes of £690 for the main and £130 for the buy to let, total saving £510!!!, not bad for the sake of a few phone calls.
Eds number is 0116-239-0353, and I can't recommed him highly enough.0 -
We got our bld & contents renewal notice this morning.
Abbey national want £325.53 for a small 3 bed house. It's gone up about £50 this year so will be looking around0 -
Can anyone recommend a company that does building insurance on a let property?
Our letting agents signed us up with one lot but they are completely hopeless, never answer their phones or send documents out when promised.
Thank you
