I read somewhere (may not have been this site!) that...

"if you live close to a main road, go out early and see if you can find any recent roadkill. A good rabbit or, if you're lucky (!?!?!) deer can feed the family for a few days...."

Uh... d'you know I'll work a bit of overtime and BUY my meat thanks all the same!!!

Hee hee I saw a rabbit at the side of the road yesterday and I admit i thought about it for a second...but what if it has been there longer than you think

I have to use proper toilet cleaner. I cannot abide limescale or anything else for that matter in my loos.
I have had many Light Bulb Moments. The trouble is someone keeps turning the bulb off :o

  • There's a few things I wouldn't consider:

Value eggs or meat. Cheap meat and sausages don't do it for me. I always buy the best that I can afford, but don't judge anyone else as I am not living their life.

Bulking out meat with soya and lentils. It is not happening for me, not my cup of tea at all, although this method works for friends.

Leaving heating off when freezing outside - this is a false economy as far as I can see - can lead to frozen and burst pipes. I just monitor my energy use and make sure that all lights that are not being used are turned off etc. Savvy energy use and walking around frozen in a damp house are 2 different things - the first one is OS.

I am old style in a lot of other ways, but especially in my cooking methods, everything from scratch and cooking in bulk!:T

There are no hard or fast rules, just what suits you best as a person.

I don't but cheap bread. It tastes horrible and nasty. I also never buy eggs that are not free range,

  • With everyone else here re: free range eggs, cannot, will not buy battery. I'd rather go without than be in part responsible for animal suffering. I'm a bit worried about margarine (spreads) because of the use of palm oil and deforestation affecting orang utans. So many processed foods have it in it's scary. I hate to admit this but I buy half fat butter from M@S at 99p per 250g rather than spreads like flora low. I'm not a weirdo, I'm just trying to do my little bit.
  • I've gone back to buying laundry liquid. I experimented with making laundry gloop, it's ok, but I prefer the way my clothes feel and smell when I use the bought stuff.

Saying that, if I run out this month I'll make another batch - I've no housekeeping left to buy more!

So, I suppose I can bring myself to use home made stuff, if I've no pennies then it's better than nothing ;)

  • I cant eat(or allow my family to eat)anything after its Use By date,I know a lot of people on here do and are fine, but after doing a REHIS course and reading info from Food standards agency, etc I cant bring myself to eat it..very rarely anything gets to that stage now im more OS,tho,I check fridge dates etc,and anything that does get missed and is passed its use by,is cooked and fed to the dog(who has the stomach for it;))
im fine eating "out of date", Best Before, display until,etc..but draw the line at Use by.

We have a gamekeeper come to our allotment site two or three times a year with his ferrets and terrier, to help control the rabbit population. He always offers us the dead rabbits but really, I can't bring myself to take them. The ferrets kill them in their burrows and drag them up to the surface so yes, they're very fresh (!) but often they're still twitching. He does get plenty of other takers though so the rabbits aren't wasted. (They are usually very plump rabbits too, living as they do off the fat of our allotment plots, hhhmmm.)

I usually have a vegetarian bake the night after the ferrets have been come to think of it.

I have a work colleague we call roadkill ron - guess why! lol he once served up a large buffet plate of various roadkill ncluding badger and squirrell, my other work colleage and his wife saw a duck get hit by a car they went and got it and ate it.

My mum and dad used to share bath water - I suppose it depends how dirty you are if you bathe everyday it wouldn't be that bad but I wouldn't do it myself.

I won't buy value tea, coffee, chocolate and sugar as I always buy Fairtrade I like to be responsible and I don't buy nestle for that reason.
