TBH people saying about germs from food where people have been eating from are not basing things on facts, simply feelings. Nothing wrong with that, but the facts are the majority of germs/viruses are spread through skin to skin contact. So if you cuddle/touch or kiss the other family members you shouldn't worry about this. Fair enough if the thought of it puts you off, but that's all it is. In that case the way forward is smaller portions and seconds if required.

You are talking minute amounts of germs and as long as the "new" dish is thoroughly reheated they will be killed by the heating process anyway.

Its like all the use by and best before dates, causes so much waste its crazy.

Obviously if someone has a compromised immune system you have to be more vigilant, but that's a whole new issue.

Its not how much goes in from the fork, its how much this amount gets to reproduce between then and use. Yes, it should get denatured when cooking, But that's still an extra amount of ' nasty'. That's why sharing a fork is different to saving then reusing food from someone's plate.

Animal safe leftovers (frankly there aren't that many, remember people, dogs don't want onions or garlic for example, and onions are the basis for so many meals) go in the dog bowls of plates.

Compost bins aren't ideal for cooked food scraps, in encourages rats.

Ideally, just serve less! Buit we all make errors and have eyes bigger than our stomachs sometimes, And sadly, those are days when we incur waste. 'Seconds' are better than big single portions IMO, :o

I rarely leave anything on my plate :o but I wouldn't have a problem saving anything I did leave for the next days lunch. I couldn't eat something that has been left on someone else's plate though! The thought of that makes me feel ill!

I'm a bit strange like that though:rotfl: Even when my son was tiny and would hardly touch his food, I'd bin it. I won't drink out of the same glass or cup as anyone, even my OH. My OH and son on the other hand drink coke from the same bottle and eat off each others plates all the time and laugh at me when I voice my disgust!:D

    Each to their own!

Kinda begs the question why he didn't just put half away before plating up but I guess it cut down on the washing up. Reminds me of a guy I used to work with, apparently at uni he'd cook a massive chilli one night, then just leave it in the pan on the stove, reheating it every time he wanted some that week - goodness knows how he never got food poisoning

This is how my DH and his FIL lived when I met them, just left food in a pan on the back hob until it was needed again. The must have had lead lined stomachs!

My SIL isn't much better, she shoves the whole saucepan in the fridge uncovered until she wants it again. It makes the whole fridge stink, lazy mare.

I don't have too many sensibilities about sharing baths. I always shared baths with siblings as a child. My sister used to have occasional accidents and my mum would simply scoop them out with her hand and flush them away! So long as the bath water is family related and doesn't contain floaters I would be fine to share!

My son once dropped my lipstick in the loo and only plucked up the courage to tell me several weeks later. I was absolutely fine and carried on using the lipstick!

My elderly mum thinks we're all too obsessed with germs and cleanliness and that a 'peck' of dirt is good for you! It's just hard to judge how dirty is acceptable and hygienic!

I am blessed with a cast iron stomach but I wouldn't however like to share a toothbrush as our mouths are pretty germy!

I wouldn't even mind doing this after my DD gave us the details of a recent A level experiment they had conducted! She swabbed her mouth, hands after using antibacterial hand wash and her mobile phone. The results were astonishing, the phone contained the highest bacteria level (7 different types grown) with the hands cleaned with the hand wash (4 types grown) and lastly was her mouth swab (2 types grown). Just goes to show that the things we expect to contain high level of germs are not always the worst!
