That's not thrifty, that's bogging! I love my Flash Bathroom spray and at 79p from Savers, it's OS enough for me!

  • Offal...which unsurprisingly sounds not disimilar to the word 'awful'. Can't eat it, or rather, won't. I was a veggie for 13 years and though i am now a meat eater once more i have never eaten it willingly. As a child i ate black pudding until i discovered that it's primary content was blood. And where they having a larf when 'Brains' faggots were introduced to the general public?

  • I was under the impression that cheap supermarket meat and eggs weren't what being OS was about?

I consider myself OS because I know the difference between the cuts of meat (I go for cheaper cuts of good happy meat), making the most of whatever food I buy and not waste them. I also felt that OS was about being responsible for the effects our choices had on food, so being more ethical in our choices, rather than just 'get the cheapest' whatever the cost to real lives...

Either way, I couldn't buy non-free range eggs.

    No non-free range eggs.

I won't put red lentils or oats in mince to bulk it out. I think it makes it taste and feel horrible. Not that keen on soya mince either. I use vegetables instead to stretch meat out.

OS isn't about the environment though obviously living OS does have a positive effect on this because it's far less wasteful. But our grannys were probably far more interested in running a house on a minimal budget than worrying about the effect they were having on their environmant.

I'm not saying that living in an ethical way is a bad thing though, far from it! But it's not one of the driving forces of OS.

mmmm yes I can see that point now. In my personal life, I try to be OS and green as much as possible, so maybe I had the two confused.

    thank you :)

I agree about the FR eggs thing.
We had occasionally at the end of the month bought the cheaper "value" ones, but now I've got our little chookies here even if they stopped laying or we had to get rid of them I couldn't face the cage eggs again.
They are such fascinating creatures and after seeing the sheer joy and pleasyre they get from running around, digging and climbing inside bushes looking for buggies in the garden I cannot imagine the suffering of them being enclosed and unable to follow their natural instincts.

I also used to mostly buy FR chickens and "happy" meat, but occasionally bought cheap at the end of the month, but our little ladies have convinced us we would rather eat veggie or smaller portions than eat meat where an animal has suffered.
Good news is we have a good farm shop fairly near who do "happy" meat and FR chicken cheaper than the supermarkets and if I can't get up there Aldi now do a FR 1.5kg chicken for £4.99.
