Some of these issues are health and safety issues, companies are required to keep an accident book and note down all accidents that occur on the premises, by not doing this they are breaking the law. Also with the water coming through the building in between all the electrics, that sounds pretty dangerous to me - I would report that to the government health & safety inspectors, should be based at your local council. It wouldn't do the store any harm to get looked at.

When I was in a PC World (East Kilbride) I was browsing through a wire basket of software and seconds after walking away from it noticed blood streaming from my finger. It was one of those small nicks that bleeds profusely for a few seconds.

I went to the customer services desk and reported it - they offered a plaster which I declined. They said their security chap would take my name & address which he did when he caught up with me whilst continuing my shopping - he also showed me the offending prong which he'd removed. I spent in excess of £100 on computer furniture etc.

I thought an apology letter and maybe a small goody would be forthcoming but I heard nothing. After something like a month I wrote to the shop expressing my disappointment they hadn't enquired or expressed regret.

Again nothing so I wrote again, this time when I heard nothing I wrote to their head office and they said the manager would be in touch, which he wasn't! I wrote to head office once more and this time I received a £30 voucher to spend in the store.

Don't let them away without at least a proper apology!

I recall an American friend of mine telling me about this guy who sued the manufacturer of a disability buggy because his parents were killed when they were hit by a speeding driver whilst crossing the road. They were crossing the road in their motorised disability buggies when the driver hit them in his car whilst driving at speed. The couples son said that the carts weren't going fast enough to get out of the speeding drivers way and this was the fault of the disability cart manufacturer. ?????????? (Only in America). I forget the outcome but if anyone knows!!!

I was in Tesco the other day and reached up to take something from a high shelf, and as I did one of the packs fell from the shelf and broke, splattering me all over with juice. Members of staff noticed as I tried to clean myself up and they called management. I was offered a voucher for inconvenience and was told that if the clothing marked by the juice didn't clean up then they would recompense me. Fortunately, everything cleaned up, just a pain to have to trip home but was given £5 voucher for hassle.

Once when I was at a conference in a v.posh central London hotel one of the waitresses dropped a tray on which was glasses and a jug of orange juice. The orange juice went all over my skirt - right down the front from the waist to the hem. Staff came running....to clean up the glass, wipe and mop the floor and NOBODY said anything to me. After asking at reception, another waitress, the events coordinator and being fobbed off I ended up having to raise my voice at them so that they would at least sponge my skirt down while I sat in one of their rooms. While they got the worst of it off my skirt was still v.dirty and sticky with a big dark stain all down the front. They didn't so much as apologise, I just got snooty and snide looks as if I had dropped the orange juice down myself on purpose just to annoy them. Customer care was totally absent, despite this being a hotel frequented by Americans.

It sounds like Tesco in your case had a similar lack of customer care - they obviously knew there was water coming in through the foyer - the least they could have done was to have staff with umbrellas. What if someone had slipped and hurt themselves? They seemed ready enough with the excuses but if it had happened before then they ought to have been prepared to look after their customers for the next time it happened. Badger them...make yourself a nuisance...doesn't matter if you only get £5, that's not the point, the point is to make them do something about this problem as it is not OK for a dangerous situation to be ignored.

no offence, but get over it! If we pursue cases like this we're going to end up like the bloody americans! And we don't want to go there!

Sorry Snowy....need to disagree with you here I'm afraid. :) Don't see the point of the umbrella bit......it was a downpour, people would have got soaked the minute they went outside anyway. It seems daft to offer umbrella shelter for a minute to cross their foyer area when they were about to step outside anyway? Different if it wasn't raining and there was a burst pipe or something that was causing the water to come in.

I know you said 'if' but we don't know that this has happened before.

What makes you think it has been? Ignored I mean. For all we know this occurrence caught the store out as much as the customers.

Don't get me wrong, you may well be right and this has happened before, but we don't know that and I think it's unfair to just assume.

Anyway I think we're pretty much talking to ourselves now as I think the OP has decided not to come back to this thread.

    Truthfully?

Well........I think this is one of those things that are a bit of an annoyance but you accept and forget about it.

It was only water. It obviously was not intended by Tesco management that you should be soaked. It was an inconvenience, it didn't harm you and I don't see that you need to be recompensed tbh.

If it was me, it would end up being one of those 'funny stories' that you end up boring all your friends with.

However, I do appreciate that not everyone thinks the same way, so good luck with however far you choose to push this.

I agree, had you fallen because of water on the floor then I'd say go for it, but it's not really that big a deal...

I just pop in now and then.... :)

Oh dear, i think a few people have been a bit harsh on the OP.

If you read the OP's post again you will ntoice this...

Now I wouldn't have minded if I had been soaked by the rain outside but I was annoyed cos it was coming through the building. The electrics had also gone and the cafe was closed because of this.

This is a pretty serious hazard really. I agree that compensation is taking it a bit far...but i dont think a lot of what has been said was fair, or even correct as the OP wasnt moaning about just getting wet!

I think we all need to be a bit more careful about what we say sometimes :)

To be fair though, the OP was actually complaining about the water coming in the entrance door and the fact they got soaked there.

Wherever it was coming in, it's not like it was done deliberately. Complaining about a deliberate act that has harmed or inconvenienced you is one thing but complaining about this is different. If there was a serious hazard you can be sure the store would have closed, they're hardly going to risk staying open if there's a possiblity someone could get seriously hurt and they could get sued are they? The cafe was closed because the electrics had gone....which bit of that says there was any kind of danger?

Why do we all need to be more careful about what we say? The OP asked for opinions and she got them, there wasn't a codicil added to say only say your piece if it's really nice or agrees with me was there? Funny how a lot of them agree....whether you think it's fair or not.
