    Viv,
I have no idea about the individual circumstances of anyone housed in your town, but I'm impressed by your indepth knowledge of local statistics (or are they assumptions?).

Living in a multicultural area myself, I know of some of the reasons why people seek help and asylum..our neighbour for example lost his entire family through rape and murder in Somalia, crime which he witnessed at the age of 12. Another family were given accomodation after the father was repeatedly tortured in his home country, as he dared to express a political view not popular with the military rulers.

MOT deserves a home, as do many other people..even drug users, many of whom have turned to drugs to block out years of abuse and misery. It's not the personal crises of others we should be attacking, but the years of neglect of public housing and support for the vulnerable.

Mumoftwins I have a question for you that I hope does not come across as being too insensitive but although I am like other posters very concerned about how you are coping and your state of mind during current events but I was just wondering how your children are coping and if they are receiving any form of help or support at their school during this time of uncertainty. :)

In my area about 5 years ago there were possibly 5 black people living in the town centre and now probably 1 in 5 is a black person this is not a complaint on my part but they all have a home whereas the same age same dependants born local person or new to the area would they have been housed? I say black person as another generalisation I don't know their personal history they could just as likely be British. I am not trying to make a point these are genuine questions.

I find these remarks offensive, you are assuming that anyone black is less likely to be worthy of housing by the council.

Can people who want to make any comments about who does and who doesn't get council housing please discuss it on the DT board and leave this thread for people to offer support and ideas to MoT. Please!

MoT, so that we can help spread the net in search of landlords, could you post the areas that you would consider for a suitable house.

I'm guessing Hemel Hempstead is ideal, but would Tring or Berkhamstead be acceptable?

    Would you look further afield?

How does the need for local housing affect the twins secondary school application?

I did put possiblys and probablys and as I said these are genuine questions. I certainly think all people needing help should get it regardless but I live in a previously non multicultural town and there are now as I said many recently arrived in the town ethnic people who are housed. I am struggling to use PC terms but am unsure what is PC but I mean no offence. We are told many inner London families have been moved to the South coast and I am sure this accounts for many of our new residents, plus a large number of Eastern Europeans but that is my point they are now residents Would it be so easy for MOT to move here? Genuinely a question and not bordering on racist to question whether it is more difficult for MOT to be housed. Please don't think I am trying to cause trouble but just because I believe MOT and many others deserve housing and I resent that you suggest I am attacking the personal crises of others.

I am sorry if I offended you I was certainly not saying that black people are less likely to be worthy of housing I was asking a question how do newly arrived in a town people get housing or do they??? They are obviously to me newly arrived in town because they were not living here 5 years ago I am not trying to have a discussion I am asking questions to reply to the general accusation 'bordering on racist' from people who appear to be housing experts. Perhaps I made my comments clumsily for that I apologise.

    - different ethnicity, so if you are born in this country, pay taxes you should go to the back of the queue if you are black or irish or jewish?????

To anyone I offended with my comments, I whole-heartedly apologise. But just for the record, I am British-born, to parents of Jewish descent from Eastern Europe, and I was brought up in Ireland, so my post was never intended as racist, but rather as a comment on the tendencies of councils to house applicants who fulfil certain criteria and tick the right boxes...

If anyone wishes to respond to this, please do it via PM, so that MOT's thread can remain hers and for the purpose it was started.

EDIT: Sorry – posted this before I saw Ampersand's post!
