  • Always have a back up account ready in the event that your bank close it. Even if they do that, contact the FOS and make a complaint over their retaliatory action in closing your account. The Nationwide did similar to me and the FOS awarded me £230 by way of compensation.

In terms of your other account, that should be considered seperate from the current account.
Almost debt-free, but certainly even with the Banks!

    Thanks Oliver27,

I got the 8 weeks thing from this forum somewhere. It said lodge the initial letter which I have done, HSBC have written back to me saying they'll do nothing until the the case is resolved. I assume my next step is to submit the court letter. Also sorry for being stupid but what is the LBA letter you referred to.

    Kind regards for your help.

    Oddie

    LBA = Letter before action

As I mentioned before I used the templates from the consumer action
group website so you might have a different way of doing it here

    the steps I followed were
    1. Send letter with £10 requesting 6 years of statements
    2. Send First letter requesting charges back, left it 14 days
    3. Send LBA warning of court action if no refund, left it 14 days
    4. Open claim using money claim online line
    5. Sit through the stalling tactics
    6. Spend the charges+interest you get back, or save it :D

Cheers matey. You sir, are a star!

I'll be using any money I get back to pay off my overdraft.
  • Just received a letter from HSBC telling me they're charging me £25 for "reviewing my overdraft" even though I haven't changed anything. I've had this overdraft since 2006 and this has never happened before. After speaking on the phone to them I've been told in no uncertain terms that this is "A new facility as of December and all overdraft customers will be charged."

    Advice, please?

    Thanks.

    Bank HSBC
    Ammount claimed £3,229.00
    Ammount received £2,816.00

I've claimed my money back for 2 accounts with HSBC. For the first one they gave me the money back promptly. But for the 2nd account, where the biggest chunk was, they seemed to igore it. I forgot about the subject until i received a letter from a debt collection company asking ME to pay them that money! So i've sent the letter threating to go to court and today i've received the reply from HSBC saying that THEY will pay ME that ammount! So cool! I'm going to reclaim for the whole family now! :T

Malak did you put in your claim after the court case started with HSBC.
I've finally got round to claiming my charges back. I've just got a list of what those charges were.
I'm not sure now whether to put my letter in with or without interest. Are HSBC still paying out. I thought all the banks had put a hold on this until the court case was resolved.
Anyone else put in a claim with HSBC lately?

  • Hello,

I was wondering if an offer made by HSBC 10 months ago would still be valid if I could write and accept the offer.

Initially it was a few hundred pounds less than my claim and I was all set to go to court with it (when I had the £120 spare). Anyway now that the test case is going ahead and there is no definite timescale I thought that I`d accept the original offer.

Has anybody else found themselves in this situation and if so what was the outcome?

    Any advice greatly appreciated

    Cheers Jimmy
  • Hi
Just some advice please, I bank with HSBC and due to financial difficulties I have had charges well over 2k in charges in the last year. I wrote them a letter asking for the charges to be refunded and they wrote back saying it the the T and C and if im not happy I should write to the Financial Ombudsman, any advice, should I write back? Also I have my mortgage with HSBC, would that be under threat? Would they close my account? Also is it just overdraft fees we can claim back or is it fees for bounced Standing Orders Direct Debits etc?
Sorry about this any advice would be helpful thanks
  • Use Martin's template letter - there's loads of advice on this site.
    http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/reclaim/bank-charges
I'm with HSBC and last year claimed back over £800 in overdraft fees, the account wasn't closed - a few banks did this early on but I think they are aware of the bad press now. You can make a claim for all the fees but be aware that a test case is being made at the moment so it may take a while - read Martin's advice on the link above - you can't do better!

    Hi SARAH
In addition to the above advice, don't worry about the mortgage- entirely seperate.
BTW if you were charged "penalties" on the mortgage account, you can reclaim those too.
Keep that letter from the bank safe. You may need it later.
    Good luck

  • I am currently claiming charges incurred through HSBC. (Letter sent 14.02.2008).

I have to say that looking through your posts, HSBC seems to be one of the most stubborn banks when it comes to paying up.

Did anyone find it easy claiming from HSBC? And whats your secret to success?
