The BMA’s General Practitioner Committee has defended the use of 0844 numbers. Last September it hit back at press criticism of use of 0844 numbers by GP practices which is claimed was “particularly galling” when many other public services including NHS Direct and many hospitals also use similar numbers.
Clearly, their metaphor education is lacking.

TWO WRONGS DON'T MAKE A RIGHT.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • I am going to move from option 1 to option 2.
I pay monthly direct debit, I also want to sign up for paper-free billing.
Looking at their website, seems you need to give direct debit details, don't want to be charged twice.
Will still use 18185 for daytime calls.
When I sign up, do the free evening calls start right away or do I need to wait till 1st April.

Like I say, do not want a mix up with direct debit payments.
Would it be best if I were just to phone them and if so what number would I call to speak to someone.

If you want to speak to someone at BT instead, you can call 150 or 0800 800 150 from your phone.

The free evening calls have been available from 1st Feb not 1st April, so if they activate them on your account should be available from Monday I would have thought.. (you are already getting the free weekends now)

    Regards

Thank you, all done and dusted in 10 minutes on above phone number.

That's correct. The reason being that Unlimited Evening & Weekend Plan (Option 3 in old money) includes 200 free texts a month. To send these you need an SMS compatible landline phone - they start from around £11 or so on eBay.

In addition to this, you can also currently send an extra 50 free texts a month online, whatever BT call plan you're on, using this link.
