Thinking of signing up my 87 year old father in law for 12 month option 3 contract.

What happens if he dies during the contract period?

    Sorry so morbid!

I had a reply about keeping your CPS if signing up to option 2.
    Dear BritBrat

Thank you for your e-mail dated **/2/08 regarding BT Together Option 2.

I am sorry for the delay in responding to your email and for the inconvenience caused to you in this matter.

With regards to your email, I would like to confirm that you may upgrade your line rental to Option 2, keeping your calls with other service provider. However, I would like to inform you that this will not benefit you unless to make calls through BT.

Kindly note that you are on Option 1 and you get free weekend calls, if you dial 1280 before any telephone number, you will get free calls during weekend.

I trust that my response has helped to provide you with the information needed and
if you have any further queries please do not hesitate to contact us again via e-mail.

    Thank you for contacting BT.

    Yours sincerely,

Her best bet is almost certainly Utility Warehouse, in common with most of the country. I use UW but I'm NOT an agent, employee or whatever. I just check that they are the cheapest every 3 months or so for my package of phone X2, electricity, gas and ADSL X1.

Even if BT were competitive, their "Payment Fee" scam should deter anyone from using them. What a good way to generate a windfall profit when things are bad. I can hear the brainstorming session now "OK, we'll do that. The suckers probably won't notice, and if they do they're too lazy to switch just because of £1.50 a month, Agreed? OK, pass round the bonuses."

How strange you think its not ok for BT to operate a £1.50p payment fee for non d/d payers, but you recommend a company that also charges if you dont pay by d/d.

This is what UW say in their T&C.
"We strongly recommend that you pay your bill by direct debit, otherwise you will not receive any loyalty discount (on your mobile line rental) or benefit from “Free UK Calls” or free calls to other club members. If we agree to accept payment by other methods, we will charge you an administration fee of 10% of the total value of each bill (excluding any HPLR costs) until such time as a valid direct debit is in place."

    This bit made me smile.

Of course it would if your call supplier had cheaper rates to some destinations.

Contracts end automatically on death. You cannot be charged for the unfulfilled potion of the contract, but the estate will have to pay any charges already incurred.

apart from the 12 month rolling contract ,are there any disadvantages to this .Are there any connection fees or hidden charges .

It is not a 12 month, more of a 12 month renewing contract. A 12 month rolling contract would assume that it never ends. The BT contract will renew for another 12 months unless you cancel at the end of each 12 month period.

The cancellation costs are pretty steep as well (£14.45 per month for the unexpired portion of the contract), as they include line rental in the termination costs. Cancelling 1 month into it and you will pay over £150.

If you want to sign up for the free Evening and Weekend calls (Option 2) subject to the rolling (i.e. automatically renewable) 12 month contract, the link you want is https://www.freeevenings.bt.com/

For anyone having problems signing up to this offer online, you can call 0800 100 400 where BT have an automated system which lets you switch to the free Option 2 tariff (subject to the 12 month renewable period)

Does anyone think that as part of these price increases BT will increase the cost of ringing 0844 numbers.
The reason I ask is that our local Doctors surgery is trying to justify them having changed to an 0844 number by saying it is only slightly more expensive than dialling a local geo number (they forget about the free calls packages or 18185).
After 1 april there will only be a 1p per minute difference unless 0844 rises.

I don't think there's any chance of that happening.

OTOH, as the cost of calling 0844 numbers (depending on the 5th, 6th and 7th digits) can be ½p, 1p, 2p, 3p, 4p or 5p per minute, the surgery could just change to a less-expensive 0844 number, still benefit from the allegedly better technology of the free telephone system they've received, but not cost patients more (well, those patients who still pay BT rates for their calls anyway).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

No - the cost of 0844 numbers are not changing.

Some oversight! 0844 numbers can cost upto 5p/minute depending on the number.

Businesses which have them may also be getting a share of the call revenue from their telephone company..

This and this may be of interest
