I don;t think bleach stops it?

If you live in a hard water area it's just one of those jobs that has to be done occasionally.

That only makes the scale white, though, it doesn;t remove it.

I say get a pumice! It's very satisfying! you can use it on scale around sink and bath plugholes, too as long as it's not plastic.

I'm sure the bleach loosens it then I scrub it off with the brush. Oh well, either way. I don't live in a very hard water area though so maybe don't have much of a problem.

I don;t think it does - not in a hard water area anyway. It's a perennial problem for me, but I enjoy the scrubbing with a pumice! Very satisfying!

I use Cillit bang... I shouldn't but it works... I might be good and start using the vinegar once I run out of Cillitbang tho... The foam sticks faily well to the limescale (and I'm in a VERY hard water area) and in bad cases I leave it overnight and come morning it just crumbles off my loo :) Vinegar works brilliantly too tho... I use it round my sinks all the time and taps, then wape everything with a microfibre cloth soaked in stardrop mix :)

Thank you for all of your replies (I have clicked the thanks button for you all). After reading this I am starting to wonder if it is actually limescale or whether it is a kind of water mark? The reason I say this is because when we were trying to clean it last night, we noticed a slight trickle of water down the back of the loo which is where the stain is. Any ideas?!?!

It's probably limescale BUT caused by your waterleak thingy :)

I would check the toilet innards as it sounds like the bal thing isn't floating up properly and blocking the hole for the toilet refill. This means water is trickling in and then overflowing into your loo and creating a kinda stalagtite effect in your toilet if that makes sense?

Fix the leak and then tackle the limescale

The Tesco one costs about 69p and is in a blue toilet u-bend shaped bottle close to the bleach.

The Morrison's version also very good. For really, really awful ones, Limelite is a real toughie, but be careful to read instructions on what to use it on.

I found a product called `Astonish` in town. 5 tablets for 99p.Left one in overnight and almost all the stains were gone by morning.Just a bit left at the water level, which doesn`t look too bad.

I've heard about coca cola - but does it really work???

No!! Don't do the coke thing!

It was in a thread ages ago as a suggested way of using up leftover coke. It's sionce turned into a bit of an OS myth that it is a cure for limescale.

It isn't. It may work, but more likely it will stain your toilet pan (and the limescale) a horrible brown colour. I've seen several mentions of this happening now.
