EMpty the water out and use a pumice stone to scrub the scale off. Easy and cheap.

  • I use brick cleaner, available from any good DIY store but be careful, it's very powerful stuff.

I use a Tesco product, from the bathroom cleaner section. It`s simply called `Tesco toilet limescale remover`, about 80p/500ml. It works brilliantly, has a pleasant scent too. It`s a strong acid. If you only use it once or twice a year I don`t think it will do much harm to the environment!
  • citric acid is the way with this.

vinegar (acetic acid) will work but it will be more potent and probably stink alot more too.

try putting some citric acid granules down your pan, you may need to use a bit as it is quite readily dissolvable in water

We once had a toilet that was so full of limescale it was black! (Iherited with the house) A builder told me what to do, and it works. Get to your local hardware store, or chemists and buy some "Spirits of Salts" (Hydrochloric Acid). Empty the loo of water, and with rubber gloves on, pour down liquid. Don't put your head over it tho, the fumes are obnoxious! You will see the limescale fizzing away before your eyes. When it has gone, flush as normal. Sparkling clean loo!

I inherited a loo that had really bad limescale and eventually cleaned the main toilet bowl with advice from here. Trouble is that there seems to be a real hardened build up under the loo rim. It's partially blocking the water flow so we don't get a brilliant flush. Anyone had this experience and know how to solve it?

Just know my nan would have had the answer if I still had her. Perhaps I can borrow the wisdom of someone elses. :)

May not be very-OS friendly but after having spent 2 horrible hours cleaning out a limescaled black toilet bowl when tenants didn't use brand new toilet brush once in 9 months, I now use Harpic Limescale toilet cleaner if a build-up occurs. I did have to look to find it though - wasn't in my usual supermarket.

I reckoned my life was more important than sticking my head down a toilet for any length of time - I'll OS in other ways! :)

Lidl do a limescale cleaner like viakali (sp?) for about 99p.

I used it when I had to clean my limescale encrusted loo in my old flat.

Here in Spain we have something called Agua Fuerte, which you buy in the local Ironmongers, it's ideal for limescale and cleaning off cement from tiles, but it is etremely caustic. It is a dilute form of hydrochloric acid and comes in a squeezy bottle which you can direct up under the rim. I beleive you can buy small amounts or the acid in English Pharmacies but you must dilute and wear gloves, protect your eyes and not breathe in the fumes
