    Happy Birthday Lillibet :bdaycake:

DH has been "clearing" DD's bedroom which involves lots of boxes being put in storage.

He was away most of the morning giving a neighbour a lift and then we went to Tesco for more boxes and some bread and veg.

I had dough for rolls in the breadmaker and baked them this afternoon.

Comment from DH - "they are very sweet - they taste like cakes! Is there sugar in them!"

Pointed out through gritted teeth that you need sugar to make the bread dough rise and because my kitchen is freezing the rolls had not risen as well as they usually do.

DDs thought the rolls were great! Bless them.

After DH's comments I really do not feel like ever baking anything again! He already moans that chops are "tough" etc. - does not like chicken or turkey but when I ask if he wants beef or lamb he says "No!"

Made Shepherd's Pie for tea but did not tell him it was vegetarian mince!

Oh Joy! He is home tomorrow doing admin!!!!

  • Ebay is evil! Went on to find some bargain tupperware, have found a 17 piece set for £5 including postage so will probably get that, have also found a set of 6 bright pink and orange glass storage jars I could put my flour/rice etc in. I want them so badly, they are beautiful, and would free up valuable cupboard space, DH just laughed at me when I showed him though :o

I know what you mean! I got so excited when I found a traditional bread proving basket when I was on holiday, it was dirt cheap and I'll use it every time I make a loaf. Our suitcase so small I had to put it in hand luggage, which OH thought was hilarious - but it made me happy!

  • Glad to see I'm not the only one.

What do you all store flour etc in? I really want some glass jars with the metal clippy lid(if anyone understands what I mean they deserve a prize) but having trouble finding any cheap ones. Think the proper name for them may be kilner jars perhaps?

Anyway help me prove to DH that I'm not odd for wanting jars to store food in when they come in 'perfectly good bags' anyway

Or maybe I am odd :o

((elona)) Tough when all your efforts seem to go unappreciated; if he won't appreciate your endeavours, then *we* will :D Well done on your bread rolls - I know how hard it can be to get the dough to rise when the kitchen isn't warm enough (could you have put the dough to rise near a radiator? Airing cupboard?) I had to laugh at your vegetarian mince comment :D What the eye doesn't see, the heart doesn't grieve over ;) Now, as for tomorrow while he's at home doing admin ... sounds like the ideal time to take yourself out somewhere for some self-pampering! Hook up with a friend for a coffee and a gab maybe? Go for a swim? Whatever you decide to do, make sure it's destressing and that you enjoy yourself; you've earned it!!

    1) Yes, they are known as "kilner jars"
    2) No, you are not odd ;)
    3) Matalan do a version of kilner jars which are reasonably priced. If I recall, Tesco's do them too (although I haven't looked for any for a while)
One more thought on the K.Jars ... just after Christmas you can often buy them (stuffed with biscuits/sweets) in the sales. By the time you've taken into account the contents and the jar, it does work out that you're getting a bargain. Might be a tad late for that now though :(
