Well, circular tins are usually referred to by diameter (straight across the widest part - sorry, don't mean to patronise).
Sometimes, it doesn't matter so much, other times it does. Cakes are best baked in the suggested tin until you know what you're doing. Something like a bread and butter pudding just needs to fit so it won't matter so much if your tin (or dish) is a different size.0 -
Well despite being....well lets just say not exactly domesticated;) I have decided to make our christmas cake this year
But I am ashamed to say that in my kitchen there is a distinct lack of baking equipment:o
So where would be a good place for me to buy baking tins, mixing bowls, weighing scales etc?
Any advice much appreciated0 -
Hi L-M,
There's a recent thread that should help so I've added your post to it to keep the suggestions together.
This thread may help with the scales: Which Kitchen Scales ?

HI L-M If you want to try out your hand at baking to see if you enjoy it I would suggest Poundstretchers for cheap utensils. But if you intend to keep baking then I agree, you get what you pay for and usually better utensils will last longer.0

Deff TK Maxx, I got some really nice sponge tins a couple of months ago.
For square/rectangular tins I'd recommend enamel, it's so easy to use and to care for. I've given up on cheap non stick as well.Piglet

Lidl have a variety of bakery stuff at the moment. I picked up a 12 muffin cake tray for £2.99 today - I had been holding out as most places sell them for £4.99 for a 6 cake tray.0

Although as a general rule I loathe the place, I have to say that TKMAxx does have some great cookware/bakeware bargains. I got a 28cm Buckingham Cast Iron lidded casserole for £18 - it is every bit as good as le Creuset and looks nicer (IMO) - I love it because I can brown my meat and so on on the hob without having to use a separate pan and then transfer it to the casserole to put in the oven. I also got some nice baking tins and a great hard anodised roasting tin. I also got two 12" x 7" pyrex lasagne type dishes in Woolies for £3.99 each - they are fab and have a plastic lid so you can put them into the fridge for storage. I use them for all kinds of things and find them really useful as Sunday veg serving dishes - I just put the lid on and put them in the fridge for no-smell leftovers in the fridge!
My Tescos has some hard anodised stuff on sale at the moment - I was tempted by some deep muffin tins for £3.99 and an oven tray for £5.99, but have resisted so far....Jane

My baking trays are persistantly buring the bottom of anything I bake on them - even if the top isn't done and even if they are lined. I've just come across a lovely biscuit recipe that I want to make - any recommendations for a new tray from you experienced cooks? I don't mind it a bit expensive if it will last...thanks0
