I don't usually spend more than I can afford to pay off at once on my credit cards, but this Christmas I have. So, have just applied online for the Barclaycard Platinum so I can transfer balance, it went through and I was accepted but after reading this forum was unsure. So phoned up and checked and the chap at the end of the phone agreed it had gone through at the deal as described.

Am, really pleased but will have to rein in my spending now - usually I am so good.

I have a number that I used which starts 0800, I thought it was a freephone numbe can anyone verify.
I asked the guy on the phone and he was evasive about whether the call was actually free - confused :(

Perhaps he wasn't being evasive .Perhaps he was just unsure .From the UK an 0800 IS free.

My credit card debt in 2005 was over £12k but I've kept taking advantage of the interest free balance transfers and currently have Virgin credit card with £813 of debt on it.

I just got hit with £1000 of car and boiler repair bills. My mum stepped in and loaned me the money and, although her loan is interest free, I want to prioritise the debt to her so I've been unable to clear the last £813 of cc debt as I originally intended. I wasn't too worried about doing another BT as the original intention was to pay it off before the interest kicked in in mid December.

of course now it;s going to take me a few months and so I'm wondering whether it's a good idea to try for another BT and if so, what cards I can apply for. My Virgin card is connected to MBNA.

I also have 3 overdrafts totalling just over £4k. Ideally. I'd like to add those to an interest free BT. Do some cards do that?

    Hi all,

Can I rack the collective knowledge on here to make sure I have got this right.

We have 2 credit cards at the moment ....

Cahoot: Current balance £748.74, last interest charged £13.14 (APR 12.95%) (this is standard rate)
MBNA: Current balance £2317.66, last interest charged £11.04 - can't remember what the APR is but it is a "lifetime rate" (we took up their offer, of a cheap lifetime rate on cash transfers, last Easter).

We are looking to transfer as much as possible to MBNA - whilst they currently have a balance transfer offer of 0% until Dec '11 (for all transfers before Jan 31st). We also have £1000 left to pay for a holiday (which needs to be paid by the end of Feb)

I am thinking the best course of action is:

    1) Pay the remaining £1000 of the holiday on Cahoot
    2) Transfer as much from Cahoot to MBNA as the MBNA credit limit allows

As I understand it, once we do this - then any money we pay to MBNA will initially be paying off the amount we transferred from Cahoot.

Is all of the above correct ? And am I right in thinking this is the way to go to reduce interest charges ?

Or would I be better off applying for a Barclaycard Platinum card which will hopefully let me transfer the entire Cahoot balance (post holiday payment) at 0.0% until June '12 ?
  • Hi, I would like to apply for a card to pay off someone else's debt. They will be giving me the money for the payments, but don't qualify for a card. Will the credit card application be accepted if I ask them to pay off a balance in someone else's name?

  • I have a barclays select loan for £17,000 over 116 months and repaying £230 a month at 11.4% AIR the monthly repayment are low but interest is over half the monthly repayment at £142. I have a virgin credit card and barclaycard both offering 0% balance transfers until October with 2.5% transfer fee.
Whats the best way to use the cards to keep interest on loan payments to a minimum ?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi folks

I saw the posts about the 17 month Barclaycard 0% offer earlier in the thread, and asked Barclaycard to take a look.

They have confirmed that the offer as we describe it is definitely on and available to apply for to everyone who meets the minimum income criteria. If you have trouble, try applying online, or asking for a different customer service rep.

    Cheers,

    Dan
I applied for this offer online a week ago and received the msg "unable to process at the moment we will contact you within 5 days" I have heard nothing since. I don't know how to contact them to find out what is going on. can you advise please? Thank you.
  • Oh,I like it .
  • Hi folks recently applied for barclaycard platinum with the intention of transferring a balance of £800 from a Tesco card but website says there are currently no offers available to me. When i phoned to query they said this may change in the future. Now im incurring interest - argh!!! Anyone had similar experience?

I just received my Barclaycard for the 0% interest for 16 months. I wanted to do a balance transfer from my Virgin Money (MBNA) credit card. I had opted out of a rate increase from Virgin 8 months ago and because of this I can't do a balance transfer. Barclaycard asks for an expiry date in order to do the balance transfer and doesn't accept a date in the past. I've spoken with Barclaycard and they say that is their procedure and without a valid expiry date on a credit card, you can't do the balance transfer. When I called Virgin, they said my account was "expired" due to me opting out. I could opt back in but all that would do would be to set my rate to the higher 20% rate. That would not change my account status so I would not get a new card. In order to get a new card, I would need to apply for a new credit card with a chance it will be declined. This is being caught between a rock and a hard place... Seriously frustrated
Have been on the phone to both Virgin and Barclaycard 4 or 5 times each today... Virgin at least has UK call centers where you can engage in a dialogue with the people beyond obvious scripts. Tried to get a contact number of someone else to talk to in Barclaycard which was a non-starter... Will try tomorrow to talk to Paul McWeeney whose name was on the letter I received from Barclaycard along with the card... Apparently Head of Consumer Sales and Service according to the lettter... However, no phone numbers beyond the "dedicated customer service team" in Mumbai. Will have to see how my detective skills are like tomorrow.
Anyone else had this ? Apparently this is a new piece of info Barclaycard are now asking for. When I asked them why, I was told it was to prevent fraud. Makes sense I said, but surely there must be a way to get around that if it doesn't accept a date in the past and you can prove it's not a fraudulent transaction. "Computer says no" was the response !

Today I received my Barclaycard (never dealt with them before) and it has a credit limit which far exceeds the amount I want to transfer from my existing card (which is 'owned' by my bank as it were).

I tried to do transfer online but it wouldn't let me but I spoke to a nice lady who did it for me over the phone. The transfer will be done in 8 working days.

I actually intend to still use my original card for essential spends (flights to see family) - is this wise or should I take out another 0% card? I'm a bit unsure on this point. Thanks for any help :)
