I was in the same situation as you. Existing customer but out of contract. In November, they advertised this offer for the free laptop. I firstly rang Aol to find out if I was eligible & was told I was but as it was the overseas call centre, I had difficulty getting them to understand my requirements so I then contacted Carephone warehouse direct. They confirmed that I could have the free laptop & for appx £2.50 more than I was paying at the time. It is on condition that you sign up to one of their talk packages on your home phone at the same time. I had read up on the talk packages & was happy with the offer. The customer service was great. They took my order over the phone & informed me it would take about 3 weeks to set everything up. I received several letters & calls keeping me updated with the progress & received my laptop within the 3 week period as promised. It's great & I'm very happy with the deal. You also receive a netgear router with the laptop so if you already have one (which I did) you could always sell it on(reducing the total cost of laptop more) or keep as a backup if anything should go wrong with your own.
  • Hi nlwsaint,

I was interested to read your post - please can I ask for some more info?

I've been with AOL for probably around 8 years or more.

I went on their silver broadband package a year or so ago with the free router (after a bit of pleading) and am paying £9.99 a month.

Have I correctly understood your post, that I may be eligible for the free laptop if I sign up to the package that includes phone calls (and does it also cover line rental?)? It seems too good to be true! How much do you pay for this, is it a good deal?

Please do you have a contact number for Carphone Warehouse?

I'd be really grateful for any tips as I'm hoping to get a free laptop for my mother to use - this would be a great deal as she doesn't need anything very high spec.

Also, does anyone know what make the laptops are and whether it is true that they are refurbished and not new ones?

    Many thanks.

    Hi

as far as i know you would have you monthly fee increased to £18-£20 a month and sign a new 24 month contract. This does NOT include line rental which you will have to pay to BT.

over 24 months you would pay £240 more and you can pick up a laptop nowadays for not much more.

As per the brand of the laptop it is DELL don't know if its referb or not

got it yesterday, its def nto refurb, i went in the whol speco f the laptop, checked ram and defo nto a refurb, its hardly been touched.

unlucky to those who got a refurb but i can assure you the one i receive is 110% not a refurb.

the latop offer is miles better than the ps3 offer.

The laptop is brand new, not a refurb. It has Vista as it's operating system and has Works installed. It's very cute looking and easy to use - it has a pretty large keyboard. Have a look on the Dell website.

I was on aol gold package & paying £19.99 pm. I am now paying £22.49 per month but that includes the talk package with free evening & weekend calls. The line rental is still payable to BT. The cheapest I could find this laptop (at the time in Nov) was £451 with the spec I upgraded it to. It is not arefurbished laptop. You need to contact member services on 0844 499 5555. It is true however that you need to sign up to a 2 year contract but like you I have been with them for many years & was unlikely to go anywhere else anyway. I understand where some people are coming from when they say it's not a free laptop cos you are paying for it in the package but, it's costing me an extra £2.20 x 24 & for me that's a good deal.
This is what you get but spec might differ depending if you choose to upgrade or not.

Well, don't call anyone. Just go to CPW's website and pick the deal.
    http://shop.carphonewarehouse.com/aol_eligibility.php

put your phone number and find out how much you'd be paying and proceed with the application when you'll need to input card details for the delivery charge and the rest just follows.
Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????
