  • Just for those who do stop breathing, then make a huge snorting noise - or just snore like a diesel train:

    My first sleep study with the local hospital consisted of a wrist monitor. They said there was nothing wrong with me whatsoever and I couldn't possibly be waking up with a feeling of my throat closing up.

    However, when I fell asleep in the ENT waiting room (clinic was running 3 hours late) waiting to see the Consultant to discuss having my tonsils out - apparently because they did this as an 'if in doubt' procedure, a new Registrar (Dutch, but I'm not sure if that's relevant) had started work for the other consultant, (not mine) and had been out in the clinic talking to one of the nurses. He marched into my appointment and informed the Consultant that he'd just witnessed me having 15 apnoeic episodes in under 10 minutes.

    I was referred to a specialist sleep unit, where I had a home sleep study which involved something round my chest, a heart rate monitor, a blood oxygen monitor and an adjustable pump which connected with those little tubes almost in your nose. That showed exactly how many episodes the previous 'study' said I never had.

    Not looked back since I brought my own CPAP machine home. Proper sleep ever since.

    I don't make a snorting noise I end up coughing and choking, it's just my bodies way of giving me a jump start I expect, awful though as some times I feel quite funny for ages once I have stopped coughing.

  • You need to get checked out by someone experienced in assessing OSA then. That sounds very suspicious to me - you shouldn't be 'jump starting' AT ALL.

    You need to get checked out by someone experienced in assessing OSA then.

    Dr suggested an air mask but I have just stuck to the Nozovent at night, the choking thing only seems to happen when I am lying on the sofa and watching the TV, never had it happen to me at night.

    You shouldn't be falling asleep watching TV. And I didn't know I was waking every few minutes, either - would have said that I slept fine if it wasn't for someone saying 'do you know you stop breathing when you sleep?'. Never mind the fact the doctor has already suggested CPAP, which sounds pretty clear to me that you do have OSA, as it's a very expensive thing to offer just for the fun of it.

    Dr's advice, I think, is the best course here.

  • Very Interesting and informative discussion for me. Before reading this topic i have no idea about my own self now i am curious to know if i am snoring or not when i am in deep sleep. :P
  • Try doing some snoring exercise. My wife told me that it lessened my snoring. Try visiting antisnoringdevices.com, she read about it there.
  • Sleep Apnea is a treatable condition. There are many things you can do on your own to help mild to moderate sleep apnea such as lifestyle changes.

    If your sleep apnea is moderate to severe, or you’ve already tried self-help strategies and lifestyle changes and failed , i suggest that you see a doctor. He can evaluate your symptoms and help you find an effective treatment such as using snoring mouthpieces.
