I had an operation on my nose for another reason but it completely 'cured' my snoring as a side effect, you could break hubby's nose and hope that the resulting re-set does the trick.

Mmmm tempted to try this next time my OH snoring wakes me even through my trusty ear plugs! :rotfl:

Does he have sleep apnoea? If so, he needs to see a doctor as this can be extremely serious to your health and well being and can even be bad for your heart.

My boyfriend has suffered for years and is now being treated by CPAP.

How would you know if it was sleep apnoea? Is there any other symptoms as well as snoring?

I though your post read that your BF was treated like C*AP :rotfl: I must need my eyes tested!

Sleep apnoea is where breathing stops during sleep for periods of time. The periods are usually followed by a loud snort and then breathing continues again for a period before the next apnoea. Daytime sleepiness is usually a good indicator of apnoea too.

Your partner will usually know if you have it before you do, as they will witness these periods during sleep. In terms of getting it diagnosed, by BF was referred to a sleep clinic by his GP and he then had to undergo some tests including a sleep monitor which he wore on is finger overnight and he was diagnosed with severe sleep apnoea.

There is loads of advice on the internet and several UK organisations that help to promote apnoea awareness.

Sometimes the nose strips are cheap to buy in bulk on ebay,

also does he tend to breathe mainly though his mouth not his nose?
(i think that might contribute to the vibrating palette type of snoring)
if so trying to breathe through his nose, especially when falling asleep might help, cant remember where i read that though.

I was referred by my GP and the consultant has put me on a sleep study, whcih incidentally starts tomorrow. I have to collect some equipment from harefield hopsital, plug my self in and then return to the hospital the next day so that can look at the results

I really hope they find something that they can treat as my OH is desperate to get some sleep.

Sorry, I should have clarified, it's really important to get treatment if you suffer from sleep apnoea. Excessive daytime sleepiness is no joke. It can cause social embarrassment and can even prevent you from driving (my b/f was stopped from driving for months until his apnoea came under control). The CPAP machine is difficult to cope with at first.......but as far as I am concerned, it's a life saver.

Without diagnosis and treatment, it would have been perhaps just a matter of time before an accident (driving or otherwise) occurred. The apnoea mean that you have to keep waking yourself up to start breathing again....which means that apnoea sufferers never achieve level 5 deep sleep which is vital to well being and quality of sleep.

As a result, my boyfriend started having severe attacks last year which were so frightening and out of character and was diagnosed with anxiety which I now know was due to lack of quality sleep. At the time, we didn't know what it was, but now this diagnosis has been explained, it all fits into place.

He has also struggled with his weight (he never seemed to lose much on diets)....which seems to have sorted itself out too.

Now he's being treated, he's like a new man......even holding a conversation with him is a totally different experience.

Snoring may have a social stigma attached to it.....but believe me, it's really no laughing matter. My sleep is so much better too now he doesn't snore. It's a shame that this condition is so widely ignored in general.

I had one of those a couple of years ago as I went to the GP with bad snoring. I don't have sleep apnoea, just snore badly (although apparently I am on a pretend waiting list to get some kind of mouth guard, it's pretend because at the moment my NHS board doesn't fund it)! I use the Boots Aromatherapy snore spray which works, just wish it was cheaper. I did ask the GP if these things were available on prescription but they're not.

It's definitely worth going to the GP because sleep apnoea can be controlled (if it is that) and like other posters have said, it can be potentially dangerous.
Got married 23rd May 2009, many thanks to all on the Weddings and Anniversaries board for their help and support!

Snoring is often due to being over weight.

My partner snores terribly and there's a lot of nights when I've totally given up and ended up sleeping on the sofa! I'm getting really sick of having to do that now though, to be honest, but it's so much easier than waiting for him to waken up and go downstairs!

He's tried everything, the sprays, the strips, a clip under his nose, etc. He's not overweight and has no other medical problems that we are aware of.

Even when I go downstairs to the sofa, or on the very rare occasion when he goes down, I can still hear him snoring loudly from up/down stairs!!!!
