Sorry, I should have clarified, it's really important to get treatment if you suffer from sleep apnoea. Excessive daytime sleepiness is no joke. It can cause social embarrassment and can even prevent you from driving (my b/f was stopped from driving for months until his apnoea came under control). The CPAP machine is difficult to cope with at first.......but as far as I am concerned, it's a life saver.

Without diagnosis and treatment, it would have been perhaps just a matter of time before an accident (driving or otherwise) occurred. The apnoea mean that you have to keep waking yourself up to start breathing again....which means that apnoea sufferers never achieve level 5 deep sleep which is vital to well being and quality of sleep.

As a result, my boyfriend started having severe attacks last year which were so frightening and out of character and was diagnosed with anxiety which I now know was due to lack of quality sleep. At the time, we didn't know what it was, but now this diagnosis has been explained, it all fits into place.

He has also struggled with his weight (he never seemed to lose much on diets)....which seems to have sorted itself out too.

Now he's being treated, he's like a new man......even holding a conversation with him is a totally different experience.

Snoring may have a social stigma attached to it.....but believe me, it's really no laughing matter. My sleep is so much better too now he doesn't snore. It's a shame that this condition is so widely ignored in general.

I think most people know they have apnoea through partners telling them they stop breathing and start with a loud snort, but are afraid to go to the GP and get help because it will mean that if they do have apnoea, they have to inform DVLA and stop driving until the treatment is successful, and of course the snorer doesnt see it being a problem as it is not them being kept awake, but my little girl snores due to large tonsils and the ear nose and throat hospital said snoring puts a strain on the lungs and heart (she is having them out)

Can I ask a question please?

I snore like a pig. My kids have commented on it :(

I was tested for sleep apnea and I luckily don't have that.
The letter from the hospital just said that, you don't have it, so go online and buy some products!

What else can my GP do? Do you have to find your own cure for your snoring problem, or is there help on the NHS?

    Thanks for any help

we used snoreeze and it worked a treat
twas dear so we swapped to boots on worked not too bad

my hubby aint fat but was a 32 inch waist whn we met, no concerns re snoring then
he is not a 36inch waist so but some weight on, when he put the weight on thats when snoring started

i would give suggestion of losing weight if heavy, or if struggling try speaking to gp there could be underlying health issues and also they may have some help for you

    best wishes

oh and there is also idea of throwing oh in the spare room

Have you tried any stop snoring mouth guard devices. They are proven to improve and in most cases even stop snoring altogether. Try taking a look. Just google Sleep Guard .co.uk and you should find it :T

    any tips to stop snoring?

No if you find any let me know as mine is getting worse, my nostrils are closing up (doctor says they are far smaller than they should be) and I feel like I have a blocked nose all the time, apparently not much can be done.
    He could try:
    http://www.britishsnoring.co.uk/shop/nasal_dilators/nozovent.php
Nozovent £13.49 I have to wear one of these most nights just to try and open the nostrils.

http://www.britishsnoring.co.uk/shop/rhynil.phpRhynil - Spray For Nose & Mouth £14.99 does nothing for me though.
Everything has its beauty but not everyone sees it.
