I recently sold an item on Gumtree and the buyer turned up to collect it. They wanted to pay with their mobile phone, I wanted cash, they told me they never carry cash haven't used cash for as long as they could remember. So, no cash, no goods, they had a wasted journey and I sold to someone else. 😁😁

Sort of thing that, if it wasn't mentioned in your advert, would have been worth them asking about prior to travelling.

They must assume everyone lives in the same cashless world as they do.

Things that are different: draw & drawer, brought & bought, loose & lose, dose & does, payed & paid

I've tried google pay, and occasionally use it, but find it more of a faff then tapping a card. Especially when I have a range of different cards, for different payments.

I carry so many cards that I have occasionally set off security systems in supermarkets. I then have to demonstrate that it was in fact my wallet that caused it, not something with a security tag still on it.

I smashed my phone on holiday abroad. I was using google maps, and someone in front of me hit it with a backpack, by turning quickly, and knocked it out of my hand. It was a real-life demonstration of how much we depend on them, and how difficult it is to function without them. I usually trim my cards before going abroad, but was very grateful I still had a selection with me.

I rarely use my phone to pay for anything because I find it just as easy to get my card out of my wallet. I do have all of my cards in my Apple Pay wallet, so I do have the option of using it if needed. My Barclaycard stopped working a few months ago so I was able to continue to use it via Apple Pay until the replacement card arrived

The exception is TfL as I use my watch to pay for my fares so that I don’t need to get my wallet out if I come home to my quiet station late at night. If I didn’t have the watch, I would stick to using a card rather than use my phone.

I don’t drive, but have a provisional licence which I always have in my wallet as there are a few occasions a year where I might be asked for ID to collect something, for example. Sadly, the days when I might be asked for proof of age in a pub are decades ago.

I always pay with my phone as it's much more convenient and I can see the payment notification from my banking app to check the amount is correct. I always a wallet with a few cards in as a backup. I use cash very rarely, usually in the chip shop as they are cash only, or when my daughter has been given some cash as a present and wants to spend it online.

I always carry mine, just because I need to keep it somewhere and putting it in my wallet is as good a place as any. I rarely need to show it, I think I did once when collecting a parcel and also once at the dump. You have to prebook and it's says you'll need to show I'd, but most of the time they just wave you through.

I've had such a traumatic experience one day that I learnt not to trust either option. So I have both, my debit card attached to my keys, small wallet, and my phone.

The cards in this thread get some rough treatment. One poster trims them, with scissors I expect. Another attaches them to their keys, by drilling a hole in them perhaps. The cards must wear out very quickly, rubbing up against the keys. My cards get mollycoddled, hiding in a plastic bag.

I carry a couple of cards in my phone case because it's simpler than having to carry a separate wallet all the time. As blue.peter says above, sometimes the shop terminal doesn't recognise my phone if I tap it to pay, and it's also a faff if you want to use any card other than your default one. It's often easier just to whip the actual card out of the phone case, and use that instead.

I have all my card in Google wallet, Set the default card and just pay with that.

In the last 6 years I’ve only once had an unsuccessful payment as shops system was down.

if I need to I just pick a different card, I do not carry any cards with me.

I do keep a credit card in my car, just to pay for fuel at Costco.

I keep a £20 note inside to back of my phones case, bus fare home.
