Yes, it's really bizarre and particularly from a big player. The only other moderately large bank I can think of that also doesn't have alerts for deposits is the Co-op but that's the Co-op so being rubbish is to be expected.

The only time really in the last 5-6 years I had cause to go int branch was for something that genuinely couldn't be resolved on the phone - a typo in my name on an account that needed to be sorted with ID in branch. Even then I suspect it could easily be done via secure messaging and sending photos of the ID. In the rare circumstances that I have any cash I can pay in at the post office. I would rather the benefits from a bank without a branch near me than lose out for the sake of a bricks and mortar place that I will almost certainly never use

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

I have been with Nationwide for 20+ years and there is no intention to move - unless they make radical changes or the service deteriorates.
Each time I go in to a branch (rarely but last time was 2 months ago) they are always helpful and professional. There are a few branches within 25 miles and that is always good to know with banking - this is why I will not choose to bank with non-branch banks, for example Chase.
Just having logged in to their website I cannot see any issues using it and the mobile app works really well. The app biometric 2FA more-or-less renders the card reader to the sidelines.
    Well done Nationwide!

I don't see the issue with the app, fair enough it was a pain back when they still insisted on using card readers but now that's gone I don't see that it's much worse than any other main bank. It's fine for all the basics of online banking, I'm not a person who cares about gettinh notofications about spending infact I have the feature turned off by choice on most my banking apps. People also dislike the Virgin app but I also find that pefectly good.

The app does work but it's very old fashioned compared to what other banks offer, especially modern banks like Monzo. I find transaction notifications invaluable, as well as being able to see direct debits before they are taken, putting money in pots, card controls etc, all things that Nationwide lack. If you are used to old fashioned banks then their app might not seem too bad but when you are used to modern banks it looks like something out of the stone age.

Santander doesn’t do alerts for deposits either

They are still my main current account provider, regardless. I have a number of other accounts which do automatic alerts, and I must say I don’t find them particularly helpful as I am getting far too many alerts, not just from banks. I check my deposits and debits in my respective apps. With biometric logins, it is easy and quick to check what’s happening, if necessary multiple times daily.

It is possible that I am a bit behind the times and missing out on advantages and/or benefits of alerts - what are the reasons people like them?

I like them because it means I don't have to keep logging in to check. They're particularly helpful when you receive random deposits at a random time to a less well used account e.g., last week someone sent US dollars to my Wise account at 14.34 and but for the alert I probably wouldn't have noticed for days.

I like them because it makes it so easy to keep on top of things, I pay with my phone in a shop for example and I can instantly see from the notification whether I've been charged the right amount, if there is anything fraudulent I can see instantly too, also if a new direct debit gets set up I can see immediately instead of having to check my direct debit list all the time.

Is anybody having problems with the new look on Nationwide? I am unable to download statements when using the new look, but if I switch back to the original look, I can download statements. Using Firefox.
