Might this be another of those situations (as with HEBS and I think Suffolk as well) where those who have previously closed their only/final account with the BS and had their login deactivated end up having additional problems in opening another account later?

As per another post, I doubt they were swamped with applications for this one.

The one that was cancelled.likely linked to the regular saver i think i had a view but never cancelled but never went full term with the regular saver so when i opened a new regular saver another was opened

I had a old saved address which matched the recommend address but had a freepost number on i didn't take a chance i put a stamp on it

I've had the same issue. The CS person I spoke with to unlock my profile said that it's because I closed my last account within the month (the 31/08 5.75% RS). They stayed on the line whilst I applied again for the RS which gave me a "referral" reference. They said it means someone in the back office will need to check it and get back to me by email in, "the next couple of days."

New nationwide reg saver opened / funded and SO until 1st September 2027 all set up in 5 minutes.

Its not intended for saavy people on here like us. Savings week is a marketing gimmick for the great unwashed who will believe it and sign up to some new cr*p offer from a financial group thinking that because its "savings week" it must be a good offer.

I know but, a couple of years ago, there were actually some really good offers. This year, I haven't seen many good or cr*p offers.

It's true, but also true that in the last 4 months we could open 4 regular savers at 8% (12 months, not the Disneyland version for 6 months only) and recently another 7%. I would sign for something like that anyday even if followed by a cr*p saving week :-)
