It makes things easier until someone posts false details and a forum member sends their deposit to a scammer.
Safer is for people to get into the habit of sourcing details from the bank/building society directly.
Posting phone numbers for banks and building societies is another potential risk.

Trying to apply as a new customer, put all my detail in and at the end it says “we don’t accept applications from outside UK”. I am abroad for another week so will probably miss this RS, I think it’s unlikely for this account to be available for a long time. Are there any tricks for opening accounts from abroad?

Zopa did a name match on ecology and appeared to sent but when went back to transactions it was shown as declined and details said payment returned to your account.

Do you mean you are resident outside the UK (you've entered a non-UK address) or just abroad temporarily and the security has detected a non-UK connection?
If the latter then try using a VPN with a UK node (although cleverer security will detect these too).
