Because I was stupid
I don't think you were stupid; along with a lot of people, you just didn't expect things to escalate again.

@QrizB No, you are right. I thought had a week or so, but hey-ho, we are relying on a White House who didn't even consult his energy sec of state on consequences of any hostile actions against Iran. And whose Sec of State for War/Defence only experience of military strategy was as a Major in the Home Guard. (And who had 'retired' many senior military personnel who could have foreseen consequencies.)
Anyway have fixed now. Stress has gone when listening early on Monday morning what Trump has unleashed overnight on Iran on Sunday.

The gas is the same as the August V1 so I switched to that during my 14 day cooling off period.
Electricity is 2p more expensive than the August v6 so I’ll stick to that for the time being.

it went down from 7.59 to 7.06.
I meant the price was the same as a cheaper, expired tariff. August v1 only came back for 1 day at the end of last month so I am happy to get on it now.2 -
The 18M Sep v1 Gas has, maybe depending on region, a slightly lower unit rate than 18M Aug v1 which may have only been available for a few days - and the lowest Octo since July. So it seemed a good idea to take - but of course even better Octo fixes might appear before end Nov or rates in general could possibly drop within a 18M period.

This was my original strategy but it backfired. Look at the current forecasts for the price cap:

Nor sure what the strategy is that's backfired?
First consideration was taking a new fix at around 7p now rather than sticking with last year's under 5p fix until end Nov without knowing whether better (unless within 14 days) or worse fixes will appear before then. The lower current SC won't cancel out the higher unit rate but the difference until end Nov shouldn't be too much.
Although cap rates aren't fixed rates, those cap predictions don't seem to suggest a drop below 7p by June. A 18M fix will cover two winters - but the exit fee of £50 gives an option if rates really drop within 18M.
