It's so hard to ignore other people's unthinking comments,  especially when you're feeling a bit fragile or unsure about something yourself.

But you can and should ignore them in cases like this (where they're just a silly opinion about something that's none of their business,  rather than active concern for your welfare). People are usually just protecting their own feelings about where they'd want to live!

I remember when we moved out here,  with several acres of fields,  everyone we knew had a different opinion about what we should do with them! It rather got me down in the end,  although if course that's not what anyone intended. But as mad as it sounds,  I really struggled with the constant refrain of "you should set up a campsite/ glamping/ caravan storage/ get llamas or pigs or goats/ have a pet burial ground" etc. We get fewer comments now,  but every time I talk about scything my hay field i get a raft of opinions about how it would be easier to find a farmer to mow it / hire in some sheep/ let the whole thing turn into a woodland (often from people who've never mowed a postage stamp sized lawn and know literally nothing about any of those options).

Anyway. You can have whatever size of house you want,  there are literally no rules that say you must fit into the smallest available house!

I think sometimes people speak without thinking, perhaps she was surprised you can jump up the ladder that much as it were? A close friend of mine went from a fairly normal house to a very big expensive one and it seemed to induce all manor of weird and rude comments from others. I hope this doesn’t influence any decisions you make as you should do whatever you like, you have worked hard enough for it! Cheery Daff is right 🙂

Agreeing with all these comments here, sometimes people just talk without thinking however when you think about it she's right, it IS a big house for just the 2 of you, bald statement of fact.  Doesn't necessarily have to be a bad judgement there. She might been momentarily surprised, thinking of something else but had to say something to keep the conversation going, delighted that you can think about going from a tiny house to a bigger house etc etc.  Dont fixate on it anymore than if she'd said ooh gorgeous carpets and you think they're awful,  its just a tiny opinion.
