All the best with the meeting if it hasn't already happened yet !
I totally agree, with others comments …listen to what they have to say and take your time before making a decision.

Thank you everyone for the support and advice ❤️
So, this morning I had a message from HR saying my acceptance of resignation letter was ready to be collected. This had my last day on, which scarily will be the same date that I started at the company 8 years ago! I was then informed that a lady who i work with in the factory and who is a team leader, but hasn't even been there a year had put in a flexible working request at the same time as me and that hers had been approved. As you can imagine, this did not put me in the best of moods! I then had my meeting with M.D. I sat there and let him talk, only speaking when he asked me a direct question. He is willing to let me try at 20hrs a week but doesn't see how i will get my work done and that I need to propose to him how I will make this happen (i already did this on my flexible working request form), he also asked me what was actually wrong with my eyes, this annoyed me somewhat because again, I had already explained this to him 3 weeks ago when I had come back to work after the surgery. I dont know, something just didn't feel right. He was saying the right things, but it just felt like he was having to do this because lovely boss had kicked up a fuss and made him feel like he had to. I did as you all advised (thank you!) and said i would think about it over the weekend, discuss it with DH and let them know on Monday. Lovely boss was excited after I came out of the meeting asking me how it went and what did I think and please will I stay. Bless him.
In all honesty, everything in my body is tellling me to leave still. I've given so much to that company over the years and yet they've let me down a lot, with the threat of redundancy, the grievance that was ignored when I was being bullied and now this. I will still have a think over the weekend but I'm pretty certain what my answer will be.
I've been mortgage free once, so let's do it again!

Trust your gut, if it doesn't feel right then don't do it.
But I would go to your lovely former boss and tell him that you appreciate all the support you've had from him over the years, it's just time for you to move on and there really isn't anything you could be offered to keep you there. You never know where he might be in the future and burning that bridge won't make anything better.

I don't feel its up to you to to tell him how you will get your work done? Surely its up to them to give you a new job description with the correct amount of duties/work that you can do in 20 hours. You will thenattend and do your work. They then need to advertise a new post with the balance of hours and work/duties if they need the remainder done?

Definitely what Daisy said - you currently have a full time role, they can’t expect you to somehow fit that into 20 hours - MD doesn’t seem to have a clue!
I think you probably know what the right decision is.

100% agree. We know how hard you already work to do your job (with all the extra responsibilities they have given you over the years) in FT hours. Going PT means the workload should be tailored to the hours, not ‘how will you do the existing workload in 20 hours?’.
I feel disappointed for you in how the meeting went, but good idea to take the weekend to speak to DH and consider - although if you felt reasonably comfortably with resigning at the start of last week then I’m not sure the weeks events and the MD conversation will have changed that!! I’m sorry your workplace haven’t treated you well.

I agree with what everyone else has said. But would it be a good idea to take the 20 hours on a trial basis to give you a few months with a consistent wage and allow you to build up your clients? Treat the company like they have treated you and give yourself a bit more time to get set up for FT self employment

Pffft, MD is living in dreamland. "Tell me how you'll get 40 hours of work done in 20 hours" - what nonsense. You weren't asking for 40 hours of pay so they can't expect 40 hours of work!
Sounds like he'll just continue to that the p*ss. I'm voting for walking away (and keeping a good relationship with lovely boss just in case). You'll do BRILLIANTLY on your own, you just never know where these things will lead
