A spanner in the works......
Thank you everyone for the kind comments and support! So, I handed my notice in to M.D. who I'd sent my request to go part time to and who had done nothing with it and basically ignored it, as he didn't believe it was important, even though I explained it was for my health. He didn't seem too bothered about me handing my notice in and was more concerned with who was going to do my work! My response was, I dont know (not my problem!). I got very annoyed Monday afternoon and yesterday as he had not given my notice letter to HR and I wanted to confirm my last day and any holidays due to me or if I owed any. This morning i go in and I am cornered by lovely boss, who I work with and not really for anymore saying he wants a word with me. He then told me he had spoken to M.D. and wasn't happy with him and that he wasn't doing anything to encourage me to stay. M.D. then apparently admitted he didn't want me to go either and just hadn't had a chance to look at my request for part time as he had been too busy. Lovely boss wants me to say what I want to get me to stay. M.D. has now booked in a meeting tomorrow as he has a 'few ideas' he wants to talk to me about.
Now I dont know what to do 😩

but part time is soooo different to full time. A nice bridge till you suss out the self employment plus some salary still if off sick or on holiday??

This is DHs and work bestie's thoughts on it too and it makes sense, but is it at the cost of my happiness and mental health.

I'm in the same situation. I want to leave for my health (mental and physical) and was offered such a good part time contract that I've taken it.....but I'm still umming and ahhing because preferably I'd rather leave - I really don't like being there anymore… you've already got a business set up. I wonder if you could put some feelers out to see whether or not you could replace your current income pretty quickly with some more clients? If you could, i think I'd take the leap. If you think not then the sensible thing is to stay (but sensible doesn't always equate to happiness!)

I'd tell them straight the way you are feeling and then just leave them to do all the talking. I managed a £5k uplift on a job offer once just by sitting smiling and nodding and leaving the other person to run on and on 🤣
There's no harm in letting them set out their stall and hear what they have to say. There's also nothing to lose if you decided to give their suggestions a try for a couple of months and then resign anyway - unless it really is having a significant impact on your mental health? In which case get out as fast as you can and don't look back x

If they are keen to keep you (and they would be stupid not to) then a pay rise alongside part time sounds like it could be workable in the short term. Would give you a chance to build your client base further and make sure there is a market there for when you do make the permanent jump.
Best of luck for the meeting!4 -
My advice, which of course you don't have to take:
Go in with the knowledge that you have quit. You are not obligated to change that. They cannot refuse to let you go. You are just listening to what they might offer you.
Also, you have quit because there are some big issues with your health and you're not even sure that part-time work will fix them.
Listen to what ideas the MD has, make notes as you go. At the end of the meeting just give a polite thank you for these alternative proposals and confirm that you will think about them over the weekend (it's Thursday tomorrow after all) and will let him know your thoughts on Monday.
That gives you a few more days breathing space, lets you and DH talk about it over the weekend, and you can have a browse on local social media to see who is asking for help at the moment (I can't remember if you drive or not but it's worth looking to see if any local schools have temp admin jobs or cleaning jobs). It also gives the MD a timeline he has to work in, they can't summon you into a meeting on Friday afternoon and demand an answer, you've said you'll give one on Monday.
Ultimately your health is priceless, so unless they're going to give you concrete support that will work for you there's no point in staying. Likewise there's no point in you messing them around by reluctantly accepting part-time work, you don't want to be spending Christmas thinking about quitting again and worrying about how they'll react if you hand in your notice in January.
On the one hand it's nice to be wanted. On the other hand if you were this bloomin' essential then they shouldn't have dilly dallyed in the first place. It's all well and good the MD saying he didn't have time to review your proposal, he's not the one with a health problem that's being made worse by the current conditions.
Good luck tomorrow!

Wishing you the best of luck with your meeting today!
I was in a similar situation last year and went part-time, literally down to working 2 days a week (longer days, so 50% of full time hours basically). It made a huge difference and completely changed how I felt about my job. I'm not saying it'll work out the same for everyone, but I reckon if you can get them to agree to part-time, especially if you can get a pay rise in order to stay, it's possibly worth a trial.
Definitely no need to decide anything today, take the weekend to think about it!5
