Sorry but I really do not think it is sensible to add anything from WW11 to your diets. Most people were undernourished & for several years after the war ended. Don't believe me. Look at anyone born in the 40s & then look at a full sibling born in the 50s. Do you know a single one where the younger one was not taller than the older.2

thats interesting badmemory. Probably the timing of it was significant? Whether you were a baby or an already well nourished 10 year old or in your twenties etc? That's really interesting, I'd never thought of it like that before. My parents were 8 or 9 when war started so we were all born well after.

badmemory - I don't think anyone, certainly not ladybird - was suggesting WWII type menus were used. I misunderstood the type of pie that ladybird was talking about, and had assumed it was a pastry topped pie (using potatoes, as the Woolton Pie recipe did). In fact, ladybird was describing a pie that used mashed potatoes as a crust for the pie, more like a quiche may look, rather than a pastry topped pie. It was my error, and I wasn't advocating anyone make a Woolton Pie.

Sorry about that. I'd been reading some twaddle elsewhere about the war, which set me off. I hardly ever eat potatoes now & haven't for years.4

This morning things did not go to plan. OH thought he had switched his car on but hadn’t so had to wait till I got from taking the youngest to college. Luckily he did have work that he could do from home. We got to college and discovered that my mum had accidentally switched the youngests wheelchair off last night. So, I will need to pick them up after college as they’ve not got enough juice in the battery. I then got some narky bloke parked in front of dropped down curb and I had to ask them to move. I was told I had an attitude problem 🤣.
Good job I’d eaten🤣

All this chat of super frugality is setting off my childhood fear of scarcity! I remember a chat with my mum where I laughed about some bizarre concoction she'd made when we were children - I believe it was swede? pie. Turns out that she was completely brassic after splitting with my dad and that she'd been gifted the swedes from a church garden
Not much you can do to earn when you have 3 school age or younger children and you're living in a small village in the sticks. Anyway, I felt bad. An amusing childhood memory for me was a source of shame to her! 5 -
I know what you mean ed but I hope she felt glad that the family remembered it as an amusing incident, that means she didn't pass on her sense of shame to you 3 which is an amazing gift to her children. You might have a sense of scarcity but it seems you didn't pick up on that till she told you ? (plus whats to be ashamed about ? Doing your absolute best for your family is very laudable, nothing shameful about not having ready money its just a fact) well done Mr edinburgher's mum 👏 🙌 👍

Visit to the plot, managed to fill 2 🪣 with weeds before I’d had enough. Picked 2 small cabbages which were destined to make a disgusting 🤢 meal for tea (we ended up chucking it in the bin). We finally have 🥦 coming, which the youngest will be happy with as it’s their favourite vegetable.Came home and brought the washing in , nature’s tumble dryer had done its job. Chopped up 2 old t-shirts for cleaning rags.Put another item on V which has sold, so will send that tomorrow. I’ve set up a book telling me what I’ve sold and when the money has been paid.Walked to the local shop as I forgot to buy 🍚. Even though it was 35p dearer than the sm, it would have cost me to drive to the sm and I never manage to leave the shop with just what I’d set out to buy. So I probably saved money in the long run.
OH has another interview for another part- time post🤞. If he gets this one he will be working full time. He’s managed to negotiate a better pay scale for the 1st new post, an extra £27 odd a month.Hmmm time for 😴.
