Very interesting.  I have some follow-on questions if I may.
    • Do you know if the Kobo will sync pages with your Libby account?
           No.
    • Can you read Amazon books on a Kobo devices.  I'm guessing no, so..
If you can convert Amazon's proprietary book format to standard .epub  format then yes
(it's hard as you'd expect so practically, no.)
    • What is the best source of paid-for books for Kobo. Is it comprehensive and similar price to Amazon?
Kobo's eBook store is nowhere near as large as Amazon's but has all of the usual bestseller               titles.
I've not compared prices directly but that's easy enough to do without accounts on either.
    • Can I read such Kobo sources books on my phone too?
Yes, Kobo eBooks are standard .epub format, read with any ebook reader app (not sure about                     Kindle...) or the Kobo app has a reader incorporated
    • Is the Kobo display comparable with Amazon devices, specifically the Paperwhite?
They are both eInk displays but can't comment as don't own a Paperwhite.

Should add that there are other sources of eBooks that can be loaded to eBook readers, probably the largest source of paid-for content (after Amazon) is Google's book store. An internet search will find others.

    Just catching up with this.
    I bought a Kindle paperwhite recently ....

Is it possible to read newspapers/magazines on this, or is it just for books?

Yes, but I think you need an unlimited subscription for that, and it's black & white which may work less well for magazines

I don't believe you can read library material (eg Libby) on a 'classic' e-ink Kindle including Paperwhight in the UK.   (You can on tablets including the Kindle Fire models and many others).
