It's been suggested that I get myself a Kindle eReader as we have two 'sunshine' holidays coming up.
Mrs B has an ancient kindle - the one that gave free 3g connectivity!
I suggested that I could get an Android tablet but was told that they weren't very good in sunny conditions.
Suggestions?

Get a kindle e-reader. I have the paperwhite and it's perfect for reading anywhere. You pay £10 extra to permanently remove ads (which I have done)1

Never go anywhere without my Kindle Paperwhite - ideal for reading in the sunshine.1

Tablets are back lit and so in a bright environment the screen looks too dark so you have to turn it up... if you are lucky the back light goes bright enough and you can still use it but the bright screen will drain the battery quickly.J_B said:I suggested that I could get an Android tablet but was told that they weren't very good in sunny conditions.
Readers have a reflective screen and a low back light for reading at night as such they can be used in any brightness without any additional battery drain2 -

Does that "free 3g forever" Kindle still work (there not being much 3g about these days?
If you just want to read eBooks from Amazon then get a Kindle, the Paperwhite is a good choice.
If you want to read eBooks from your local library or other eBook retailers then look at another supplier like Kobo.
If you want to do lots of other things as well then buy a tablet - they are not so great for reading eBooks for the reasons above.1 -
Might be worth noting - if you wish to take advantage of borrowing free eBooks from your local library, Kindle does not allow some/most library eBook platforms. I am forever disappointed I can't read my BorrowBox loans on my Paperwhite

An e reader is best if you only read books on it. If you want to also browse internet, watch videos then a small tablet might be better.
The tablet will also get very hot in the sun.
I love my kindle but am tied into their book format only.
I am considering getting a kobo to beneift from library access for free books.
The e readers also have a great battery life compared to tablets which is great for travel.Grocery challenge June £241.19/£320. July £303.97/£215 August £318.68/£310

We've had Kindles for the best part of ten years, upgraded to paperwhites about three years ago.. We share our books and make sure that we've downloaded a good selection before we go away - never had a requirement for 3g.
As said above, tablets aren't much good in bright sunshine and the batteries only last a day or so. Our Kindles easily last a couple of weeks.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers1 -
Thanks - I did think that may be a better option than the CEX onedebitcardmayhem said:flaneurs_lobster said:Answering in bold ............Does that "free 3g forever" Kindle still work (there not being much 3g about these days?
yes, but she doesn't want to give it to me!

Sounds good

I only tend to read stuff on holiday and have never had a library book since I left school in the 70s!! 🤣

See above re library books! 😉The_Librarian said:Might be worth noting - if you wish to take advantage of borrowing free eBooks from your local library, Kindle does not allow some/most library eBook platforms. I am forever disappointed I can't read my BorrowBox loans on my Paperwhite
