Let this be a lesson learnt. The weekly MSE email goes to millions of people, so free money offers get snapped up quite quickly as the retailers offering them have limited capacity/budgets for their offers. Snooze. Lose. Better luck next time

  • I opened and funded £200 this morning into the Smart ISA. The £200 is showing on the account.

This evening I have looged and am looking to trade. I click on "Open Platform" it takes me to the main dashboard:

Then it take sme here with a £250 min investment.

Have I done something very wrong?

Or is the website just playing up.

I would guess (but I'm not very familiar with their systems) that the Smart ISA/Smart Portfolio has minimum investment levels? As those are pre-set investments that IG will choose for you.

The DIY options enable much lower investments. In which case you should opt out of that 'Smart ISA' and change it to the not 'Smart' one.

    The original MSE instructions suggested:

Open a stocks and shares ISA manually. This is easy to do – from the main dashboard, click ‘Add an account’ and then select ‘ISA’ and follow the instructions.

Fund your stocks and shares ISA by clicking ‘Add funds’ from the main dashboard (make sure you select the stocks and shares ISA, not the share dealing account). You can't use a joint bank account; it must be in your sole name. Transfers in aren't eligible for this offer.

Use your stocks and shares ISA to make your first investment (no min). To do this, click ‘Open platform’ for your stocks and shares ISA and then select the share or ETF you want to invest in (prices are in pence). Once you’ve chosen, click ‘Buy’ at the top-right and choose the number of shares you want, then complete the purchase. Alternatively, you can download the IG Invest app after signing up.

You must complete all these steps by 27 Feb, then hold your investment until 1 July. You’ll then receive the cashback by 30 July (it’s paid into your share dealing account, which you can then immediately withdraw, along with any other balances/investments).

    Hope that helps.

If you can download the app then do that, it's plain sailing on there. I too came across all that nonsense on the website, had to go through a risk assessment and everything it was painful. Downloaded the app and it was an absolute breeze, done in seconds. But you can only invest when the markets are open (UK up to 4.30pm I believe)

I managed to sign up before the deadline but wanted to do a bit of research before investing. Most of the ETFs that I want to invest are saying I need to complete a form to purchase US shares before I can complete.
Is this normal or am I in the wrong area of the website?! there are other ETFs that I can buy straight away as per the MSE instructions so I think it is the right area but I haven’t seen anything about the US Trading form.

I assume there are no tax implications of the form or US shares as this is all an ISA? I am under my £20k threshold for the year.

Some brokers insist on a completed W8-BEN form before they allow you to do anything. There’s no harm filling it in, you’re just declaring that you’re not a US resident. When it asks for a TIN (Tax Identification Number) you can use your National Insurance number.

It clearly states on an email from IG that you hold your position OR make an investment each month up until 30 June.

So took a position two days ago so based on that all I need to do is hold it and no further investing is required.

I bought 1 share of "Lloyds Banking Group PLC" - @ 102.9366, thus almost £1 exactly. £199 sat uninvested.

Best way of keeping market exposure to an absolute minimum. Looking forward to the 100% £200 profit.

I bought £202 worth of Lloyds, it's gone up £2.50 since yesterday. Aren't you interested in having a stocks flutter even just for the hell of it?
