    avg just flagged a message saying virus database out of date, but DD has said she can't download updates.

    tried the address in IE, won't work, page cannot be displayed again.

    now that you have a connection,try updating the AVG virus database. if there is an error, what is the error message?

    tried updating - got this
    an error occurred when trying to connect to the server. Server name cannot be converted to ip address

    there is a space after the ping

    ping 64.233.183.104
    ping 192.168.1.1

    PS if you didn't have to enter a password, then it sounds like your router isn't encrypted, not good, but will come back to that.

    thanks albertross, did do that, but do have both bits on same line as can't get on new line unless press enter.

    two different lines

    the first ping is googles ip address, the second is your router.
