That sample looks really good.
I think the 3 stitches to practise are single, double & treble crochet, that should cover most pattern requirements and I wouldn't wait too long to get a small project started- an incentive!

Sorted out some of my excess stash (some many years old!) will go to local school and local charity shop that has craft area.  Fed up being an adult - op thurs - so much to sort out but just to pull on big girl pants lol. Thanks everyone

Working my way through the pieces to make my rose pot only another 10 leaves and 5 roses to make lol. I have a sunflower version that I have made- they do come together really well

@KajiKita.  Yes it is cotton yarn DK/Sports weight with American terminology which I have to remember  
this is the sunflower one (and my paper swans) - though the sunflower one is smaller.
