Have you looked at the BMW M5 estate or Merc E63 estate? Top gear featured both recently and they were considered truly great cars to drive and look at.

And all those who are rubbishing this thread, keep your opinions to yourselves. He wants advice on which car to buy, he didn't ask for anythign else!! Just cos he wants to spend £40k on a car doesnt mean he isn't moneysaving. In fact, it probably took a lot of moneysaving in the first place to be able to afford a £40k car ;)

If I was spending £40K I wouldn't buy a SUV type barge; if it had to be big enough for things to go in it then it'd be an estate, which pretty much leaves the 2 cars mentioned above. I'd take the M5 estate.

But he's probably 13 and jacking off to stuff he's downloaded from Kazaa or LimeWire?

If you've got £40k to spend on a car then you can afford an accountant........he'll tell you not to spend that sort of money on something that depreciates by 40% the moment you drive it off the showroom forecourt.

Any advice that you receive from me is worth exactly what you paid for it. Not a penny more or a penny less.

BME 3 series touring - spec it up and it'll cost ya

    335D M Sport Touring - 286bhp,
add on some gadgets, like sat nav, dab radio, comfort access (so it can tell when you're near the car and will automatically unlock.. )

you also get flappy paddle gearchange, and loads of other stuff..

    all for only £39,825

so slightly underbudget, but its a fun fast car, that is an "estate".. :)

I've no idea. I hate gadgets, so I'd have none of them. Anything that improves performance I'd have, but any computer !!!!!!!! would go, as would sat nav and air con etc etc. Not that I'd buy a barge to start with. It'd be an Elise or VX220 anyway.

Sigh - BMW don't do anything as vulgar as an "estate". I think you mean the M5 Touring. :-)

(I do agree with your choice - I have two M5s, though they are both saloons, not tourings).
