There are plenty of examples of building societies which only accept applications from new customers in a defined geographic area for some/all accounts. I'm sure there must be some example in banking but I can't bring any to mind.
Yes, but building societies have a more traditional link with a local area - many carry the name of that area and some only service local residents. Their raison d'être was to provide finance for property purchases. Banks are a different kettle of fish. As I said before, it's interesting that no British bank, to my knowledge, refuses applications from residents of Northern Ireland - yet we have to accept that if we live in Great Britain we are not allowed to apply for an account with Danske. I do wonder if someone (with more money than sense) could mount a legal challenge on the grounds of discrimination.

I'm at a loss as to why you think building societies would somehow be subject to a different test on this than banks.
Not that it matters a jot, but they too have a traditional link with Northern Ireland, they used to be known as Northern Bank and they've never had branches on mainland GB.
Geographic location is not a protected characteristic under the Equality Act, nor should it be; if you were to move to NI, you would immediately become eligible. That's quite different from age, disability, gender, orientation etc.

I'm at a loss as to why you can't understand the different paradigms of a building society and a bank. Yet again we have no alternative but to agree to disagree. No point flogging another dead horse.

I understand perfectly well. What I don't understand is how the ownership structure would matter even a little under  the Equality Act? If the answer is "it doesn't" then which legislation would you mount a challenge under, and how does that legislation allow building societies but not banks to discriminate based on the applicant's location within the UK?

Back on topic, I have had the Reward current account for a few years, I live in the UK but not NI. From the Danske app I opened a savings account and then used the messaging facility to close the Reward current account.

When logged in to the app, it does not give me an option to open a current account, only savings accounts.  If I try to apply for a new current account from the Danske website the online form states I must be resident in NI.

I have now applied for a new Reward
current account whilst logged in to Danske ebanking on a computer.  I am hoping the process is not so slow as I am already a customer and have the app and the Danske ID app already.

Cant believe how inefficient this lot are!
One week since application, and just an email to say account approved
At least you got an email. Mine is still under "QC Review"! They are shockingly old fashioned. They are one of the few banks I have never gone near up until now, and now I am reminded why.

Received an email just there now with my welcome docs etc.... welcome letter had someone else's name and address... Phoned them immediately about it. They apologised and will investigate. Asked me to delete the email and they believe there is no reason to think someone else received my welcome docs etc... Not great

So they breach someone else's privacy and ask you to delete the email presumably so you don't send it to the Information Commissioners Office. Then they expect you to take their word that no one else should have received your welcome letter and that they'll investigate themselves? What other information have they possibly sent to the wrong people that we don't know about?

Perhaps they'll send me your welcome letter, should they ever finish processing my application!

I have real reservations about this bank, their level of incompetence is shocking.

I kinda already knew about how difficult they are to deal with and how out of date they are through a friend. I'm only switching a backup CC thankfully. If they had of wanted 2 DD's as part of the bonus offer I wouldn't have bothered.

I won't be deleting any email I will be keeping it as evidence in case anything happens down the line. I'm slightly concerned now if my details have fallen in to the wrong hands (the documents in email contain name/address, customer number account number etc.) they could do anything I guess? Take out loans / overdrafts? Maybe I'm overthinking it.
