spent most of the afternoon with rick- he is a very frightened (little) boy, i think he thinks that he will be in this state for the rest of his life-he wanted the photo of him in the garden messing around that was stuck to the window - we got it down and reassured him as best as we could that he would be able to do that again-

he tried to write down something using his fingers, although he is dyslexic, i managed to get an alphabet card from the nurse. using his limited ability he told us he was lonely - and wanted his friends - he spelt out his best friends name and confirmed that he wanted him there - i phoned his friend and left messages for him as i want to take him to the hospital with us in the morning, but as yet no reply.

if there is space to around his bed, sounds like he might enjoy having pictures of his friends and family around him to keep him company.

also, i know its not traditionally very boyish, but do you think he would take comfort from having some kind of teddy bear for when he's lonely outside visiting hours? places like the bear factory are fab - you can get 'bears' out of all sorts of different animals, and get various outfits etc, so it neednt look girly or childish, and might just provide some comfort in the dark hours

    thinking of you all xx

there's no available space round his bed due to the machines that he's "plumbed" into the window is in his vision area
he has a teddy bear which he likes its a lucky leprechaun and sits on the bottom of his bed.

    update.

the physio's got Rick out of his bed today and he's sitting up:beer: and i'm sure that will air his painful looking sores he has on his elbows / bottom etc. he's now been on 24 hours without ventilator - i am told he managed to get some words out (dont know how with the trachy in ) but anyway thats impressive.
slept poorly last night again- dreamt about a dead horse laying on the bin:eek:

haven't been in today because i have a cold and don't want to pass it on. his sister is going in tonight, we are hoping tomorrow night to go.

Aw fsdss i know how hard it is when you have had a bad dream , You cannot get it out of your head , I know how hard it is to stay away from the hospital but you always do whats best for Rick please take the time to rest because your body is letting you know you are pushing yourself too much But i know you always put yourself last that why i call you a very special person.

Its great news that lovely Rick is sitting up and Rick was able to say a few words , I'm crying again but its because I'm happy for Rick , I think Rick is like you , He will not stay down for long is there not a TV in his room?

A bad dream means a new beginning New Beginning

    Take it easy xx

Well i have some EXCELLENT NEWS for you all

Rick has been transferred back to Kettering Hospital tonight (he's still in ICU) but hoping to move him onto a ward soon. he still has his trachy for night time but its closed in the day which means he is able to eat!!!!! (and talk) they are feeding him yoghurt and ice cream - tonight his mum fed him mashed potato's and gravy to which he was delighted!!!! last night the doctors gave him a drink of guinness through a straw:T. his mum has been by his bed most of the day and this has really been to both of their benefits, hopefully they can resolve some of their problems and focus on the future relationship.

he is still confused, but he had a great welcome back to Kettering from the nursing staff - to which he keeps thanking them. he states that he's having bad dreams too (they are a bit bizarre) but anyway who hasn't.

he's very particular on his personal hygiene and cleanliness and has demanded deodorant, a shave and a hair cut after being given a mirror to look at himself, the nursing staff have arranged for the hairdresser to come in by in the morning.:D (didn't know they did that)

i am full of head cold - so staying away today but we have sent messages to him.

the physio's have got him up on his feet and his recovery appears very fast moving - he took 2 steps today.

he still looks like skeletor and is all bone - but we'll all soon have him healthy looking and handsome again.

tonight i can really see a future for rick, it is such a relief.

    Wonderful news!! :j

I've been following the thread from the beginning. I have 2 sons, the youngest is just 20. Don't know if I would have been able to cope as well as you.

Best wishes to the whole family & a big hug for Rick (although now he's getting back to normal a big hug from an old 49 year old is probably the last thing he wants!! :o )
