I didn't take you for one to live of (sic) social media stories but it takes all sorts.

If that's aimed at me, I don't use Twitter or Facebook.
If a gas smart meter battery is failing it may close the Shutoff Valve (or start incrementing the reading when no gas is used).

Have any instances of that happened?

The accounts we've had from people here are simply the screen stops showing anything and the suppliers aren't bothered about sorting it out urgently because the gas is still on.

I doubt that such a serious vulnerability allowing endless free gas would be allowed.  It would soon be discovered and exploited.

It's aimed at anyone on this post gullible enough to think that any smart meter will be shut off before due process.

The rest is just (can/may/could) and that's the slippery slope for some the marginal things that can happen are then blown out of proportion and suddenly social media folklore.

I understood that if the battery goes completely flat it doesn't actually record anything. So 18 months down the line your gas supplier bills you an estimated amount based on historic usage.

This is what happened to parent. Meter completely dead and needed replacing - not showing or sending any readings. Gas still flowing freely. Bill for guesstimated usage in the period when readings couldn't be taken.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Yes, which is consistent with threads we've had here.  I was asking if anyone has had the valve shut off when a battery dies, cutting off the gas.

I suspect the answer is never, or very very rarely. Just one of the weapons in the smart meter nay sayers poor arsenal of reasons and excuses.

Looking forward to some statistics on this from the person that bought it to our attention.

The chance of the smart meter having a battery fault is so remote as to not even be worth thinking about. And in the incredibly rare occurrence that it might, you contact your supplier and they fix it. Exactly how if an older (and less reliable) non-smart meter develops a fault.
You obviously didn't read MeteredOut's tale of woe.  It's dragged on for over 18 months,  EDF didn't want to know and it still hasn't been completely resolved.
There's no way a bellows meter could misbehave like that.
Why are shut off valves a concern?
Because you can't use any gas appliances if the SOV says NO !
Gerry, I think you’ve misread MeteredOuts thread. The issue there didn’t have anything to do with smart meters, it related to a certain model of *non*-smart meter. The replacement smart meter worked much better and helped to show the over consumption the old dumb meter was recording. It’s literally showing the opposite of what you’re claiming.

Can you share any stats/data on the concern that smart meters are shutting off users gas supplies? I fear we are simply veering into conspiracy theory territory here that risks misinforming other readers.

It happens and there are dozens of threads about it.
Credit meter customers seem to be given estimated readings, but prepayment meter customers often get the use written off.
