Thanks for the replies. I was not aware that there was an auto top up option but I have found it now. So as long as the debit card is in date it should be ok.

Thanks Zagfles, good idea. I could set the auto top up to take a £10 card payment in the middle of the 90 day period.

I'm relatively new to 1p mobile, so I haven't had much experience of using their top-ups.
I find some of the recent comments confusing.

Is it possible that you would be paying more than you should by using auto top-up?

Can an auto top-up pay insufficient money, such that you run the risk of being disconnected?

Is there some other downside to auto top-ups, such that people go to the trouble of manually topping up at various points in the 90 day cycle?

  • Surely 1pmobile are no longer worthy of any mention by moneysavingexpert, purely because of this sneaky move to reclaim "underspend" ?

I foolishly signed up, paid £10 & didn't spot that automatic renewal was already selected. They've had at least £40 for barely 5 minutes of calls.

I agree it all sounds a bit complicated from what you might read on here and indeed what you might read in their terms and conditions but ultimately, if you want a mobile provider where you can pay a few quid to top up and then never use the phone then 1p is not for you.

They want to make a minimum of £10 every 90 days so if you use your phone for calls and data - enough to have one of their boosts set up - then you should be OK
  • Lesson learned ! I'll see how long my phone service lasts. I'm tempted to jump to ID Mobile & start using my newish smartphone. Although I've been a holdout re smartphones, I've used a mobile phone ( not very much )for nearly 30 years. I'm particularly attracted to ID'S data rollover.

When you look at the prices for 1p's boosts - those with data only and those with calls and texts included - you can see that calls unlimited calls and texts cost about £2 per month.

Data is what most people want and it's amazing how much or how little one can use depending on what you do. I Watched a few YouTube videos on mobile data when away and was shocked how many GB it used up - so much so I bought a 25GB boost having normally had trouble using all of my 4GB each month!

So ID's data rollover does seem appealing.

Videos are the big data eater, I'd never watch videos on mobile data. Stuff you actually need while mobile like maps, transport apps/websites, review websites, messaging apps etc don't use much. Apps like WhatsApp won't automatically download pics and videos if you're on mobile data, it'll tell you the size and give you the option.

I've never used more than 2GB a month, rarely more than 1GB, and I travel a lot, and I do use data when mobile if I need to. But stuff like cute cat videos or uploading your 1000 holiday pictures can wait till you've got wifi. A few pictures won't use much, but just think a video is probably over 10 pictures a second!

Always download maps for any place you're going, useful even if you have unlimited data in case you can't get a signal.

Two oldies who use phones for emergency only. I feel inclined to redeem credit and lose £10. Is that correct, any advice to pay as you go when credit is retained please? Grateful for any advice. Thank you.

once your're in the minimum £10 period they will deduct £10 from your balance or close your account. (if you've used some credit it may count towards the £10)
